Before he became president, Jimmy Carter managed his family's peanut farm in Georgia.
In time, he became that state's governor.
Many voters liked that Carter did not seem like recent presidents.
He promised to be honest and tried using his power to find peaceful solutions to conflicts.
But Carter's lack of experience sometimes hurt his presidency.
He could not seem to solve America's energy crisis or economic problems, and four months he could not free American hostages held in Iran.
At the next election, Carter was easily defeated, but he continued working as a diplomat and human rights activist.
In 2002 Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.
