  • hi it's Jennifer from Tarle speech with your pronunciation question today's

  • question is how do I say the words man a male and men lots of males and woman a

  • female or women lots of females spelling is super confusing when it comes to

  • these words so let's go ahead and take a look at them okay so let's start with the

  • word man man yes I'm actually using some phonetic symbols here just to help us

  • differentiate the word here so we're going to start with that M sound mm air is

  • coming out of your nose and lips are together open wide in a round circle

  • mouth for the AH and that's going to help you get your tongue down and low in

  • the mouth for the right tongue position the back of your tongue will be pulled

  • up a bit and then we're going to end with the N sound man and for that end

  • you're going to touch the tip of your tongue to the back of your top front

  • teeth and the air is going to come out of your nose again man man for the word

  • men same beginning and end sound but this vowel is a little closed men-men so

  • look it's the difference between man and men men so slightly open mouth for the

  • eh vowel and your tongue is flat and in the middle of your mouth so we have man and

  • men man men now let's look at woman and women this is where spelling really

  • confuses people so for women what we're going to do is we're gonna say that ooh

  • vowel like we hear in the word look so for the vowel

  • your mouth is slightly rounded the mistake I see is that people pucker way

  • too much and they say woo and they make that vowel really long it's not going to

  • be long it's going to be nice and short w for the W and then you're gonna

  • pull your lips back to slightly rounded for the vowel wooh wooh wooh that is

  • key you must move from that puckered mouth to slightly rounded lips for the

  • vowel wooh wooh wooh and then we're gonna end with Mun yes Mun we're not

  • going to say man it's going to be Mun with a short uh vowel so let's try that

  • woman wo-man wo-man woman woman woman now for women again spelling is not helping

  • here we're going to say two short I sounds wi-men women women women and

  • for that I sound ih again your mouth is just slightly open and your tongue is

  • down in the middle of your mouth if you're curious the difference between

  • that eh and the ih look how close those are ih as in wi women as opposed to eh as in men

  • it's a little more open in the eh so ih eh women women women woman woman woman men

  • men men Man Man Man Man men woman women so the man addressed the men while the

  • woman addressed the women give it a try I know people are going to notice the

  • difference if you found this helpful we would love a like and a share don't
