A station will be a rider's first experience with Ashland BRT and it will be different
than what bus riders are normally used to.
First there will be limited stops. One every half-mile and at CTA L stations to help increase
bus speeds and decrease travel times.
Each station will have a center platform that serves both the north and southbound passengers
and provides a refuge for pedestrians crossing the street. Customers will access the station
from the existing crosswalk, which will connect to an accessible ADA ramp to a level platform
long enough to accommodate two large buses.
To serve these stations Ashland BRT will use a special fleet of buses with wide doors on
both sides of the vehicle. Customers will board the bus at the same level as the platform,
so boarding will be quicker and easier.
BRT stations provide the opportunity to re-invent the street from the ground up. The Chicago
Architecture Foundation and the Chicago Architectural Club recently held a BRT station exhibit competition,
that attracted forty-two entries from fourteen different countries. The design concept provides
an example of an iconic, functional and sustainable BRT station that could influence the design
for BRT stations across Chicago.
We're still at the beginning of an extensive design process and we want to hear your thoughts.
