“The world isn’t perfect. But it’s there for us, doing the best it can… that’s what makes it so damn beautiful.” — Roy Mustang (Full Metal Alchemist)
Greetings Voicetubers! Hugh here, back with another episode of the Pronunciation Challenge! Also, happy Mid-Autumn Festival for all those celebrating the Chinese Thanksgiving! It kind of is Thanksgiving, isn’t it? For those who don’t know what the Mid-Autumn Festival is, it’s a time when Chinese families get together to have a meal and admire the full moon. It’s also called the Moon Festival to some and what’s a Moon festival without mooncakes?! Did you know one baked lotus seed paste mooncake has more calories than five fried chicken drumsticks?! Crazy right?
Anyway, back to the actual topic at hand. Today, we’re talking about my favorite pastime during my teenage years. What is that you may ask? Well, that’ll have to be watching Anime! I don’t have nearly as much time these days to watch Anime but back in high school, it was routine for me to watch Naruto, Bleach and One Piece every single week! I never missed an episode! Ok, ok, the actual topic isn’t just about anime. It’s about Netflix using Anime to win against Disney+! Can they actually beat Disney? Let’s find out after the featured sentence!
Today’s featured sentence: Working conditions in the anime industry can be strenuous with long hours and slim margins.
I’ll say that again.
Working conditions in the anime industry can be strenuous with long hours and slim margins.
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have conditions Three syllables. “Con” has more of a short U sound. “Di” has a short i sound and “tions” has your typical “T I O N” sound. Conditions
Next up, we have Industry Three syllables “In” sounds like the word, “in” like “in and out”. “Dus” has a short U sound and “try” sounds like the word, “tree”. Industry.
Lastly, we have, Strenuous Three syllables. “Stre” has a short E sound. “Nu” just sounds like the letter U and “ous” sounds like the word “is”. Strenuous.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is: 1. industry Definition the companies and activities involved in the process of producing goods for sale, especially in a factory or special area Used in a sentence you could say, “I finally got into the film industry!”
Next word, 2. strenuous Definition needing or using a lot of physical or mental effort or energy Used in a sentence, you could say: “You should avoid strenuous exercise right after eating.”
And lastly, 3. margins Definition: the profit made on a product or service Used in a sentence, you could say: “The profit margins are really thin working in the restaurant industry.”
So what do I think about the situation between Netflix and Disney? Well, if I had to choose between Anime or some Disney cartoons then it’s Anime every time! I never really had an interest in western cartoons anyways! The only western cartoons I really enjoyed watching were Spider-Man and Batman the Animated Series. Classics. Besides that, I would much rather watch classic Anime such as Ranma ½, City Hunter and good ol’ Dragonball Z.
I used to get made fun of for watching Anime growing up in Canada. It’s funny how most people here enjoy Anime more now. I always knew Anime was great, the western world was just slow to catch up! How can you go wrong? Anime has great fight scenes, a great story and great animation! Anyways, I can go on all day about this topic so I should end it here. Make sure to get those recordings in if you haven’t done so already! Looking forward to hearing your recordings! I actually listen y’know! Alright, until next time, see ya!
