Introduction:
Hi guys, sorry it’s kind of a heavy topic today but actually, it’s an important one worth addressing. I’m sure all of us have felt depressed before. However, feeling depressed and having depression are two different things. Our video explains the symptoms of clinical depression, including behavioural symptoms and also physical manifestations inside the brain. Be sure to take a look at the video later after you complete today’s pronunciation challenge. So here’s our sentence of the day:

Vocabulary:
1. Suicidal (adj.) IPA: /ˌsuː.əˈsaɪ.dəl/
People who are suicidal want to kill themselves or are in a mental state in which it is likely that they will try to do so.
• Suicide (v.)
Example: Since the break-up she started having suicidal thoughts.
2. Depression (n.) IPA: /dɪˈpreʃ.ən/
the state of feeling very unhappy and without hope for the future
Example: At the time, she hadn’t realized that it was depression.
3. Reduce (v.) IPA: /rɪˈduːs/
to become or to make something become smaller in size, amount, degree, importance, etc.
Synonym: Minimize (v.) IPA: /ˈmɪn.ə.maɪz/
to reduce something to the least possible level or amount
Example: I try to reduce and minimize plastic waste by bringing my own containers to buy take-out food.
Outro:
For some people, it can be difficult to express how you feel to others. It can also be scary to share something so personal with someone else. If you are not sure about talking to a good friend or close family about your situation, I encourage you to start with a doctor or a counselor.
Talking about how you feel with someone you trust is the first step towards feeling better. If someone close to you is suffering from depression and has come to you for advice, try not to tell them it’s just a phase and that they will get over it because comparing their situation to normal, temporary feelings of sadness can make them feel guilty for struggling. Instead, help them acknowledge that it is a mental illness which they cannot have control over and ask if they need your help seeking treatment from professionals. Alright guys and that’s it for this week’s episode. Don’t forget to leave your recordings and I’ll see you again next time!
