  • good.

  • I'm rob Maliki and welcome to a life that travels.

  • And today I'm at Southern Cross University.

  • Advil is more such a beautiful day to be here on campus.

  • Let's take a walk around and see what this university is all about.

  • We're gonna talk about rankings, hopefully chatter some students about what it's like to study here and by the in this video, you should have a much better idea about whether this place is right for you to study.

  • I've been working in higher ed for over 20 years now or back 20 years, I should say, and have literally helped tens of thousands of students in terms of developing resumes and etcetera.

  • So we've got great information in this video.

  • Drop me a comment.

  • If you've got any questions, this guy, let's get started.

  • Some across the union was actually founded in 1994 has multiple campuses obviously up on the Gold Coast as well as little satellite campuses.

  • But here it is more is one of the mind campuses, and you can study one of many subjects here.

  • Health sciences, obviously one of the biggest faculties for the university.

  • But things like environmental silence really nice creative industries, creative arts.

  • You also taught and really nicely done and music as well.

  • We'll have a look of one of the music labs as we go.

  • I love this part of new South wiles.

  • It's got such a great community feel to.

  • It will be interesting to see if the university also sort of is reflective of the fact that it's a really chilled, friendly part of of new South wiles and a strider.

  • We'll check that out as we go.

  • University has about 16,000 students, mostly undergraduate programs, and cross the wide range of disciplines.

  • And how does it rank?

  • Well ranks around about 30 or 40 in Australia and inside the top 800 in the world once appeared.

  • One thing super important when you look at rankings is to really look into the details because some university rank really, really highly across the board.

  • But that doesn't necessarily apply to all the disciplines, and the same is true.

  • If you just look a global ranking and be like, Oh, it doesn't rank very well, you're actually missing some of the detail where in the particular area where you want to study an institution might actually be world class.

  • So the site that I recommend you check out is the quality indicators of learning and teaching the quilt and I website or drop down here in Bermuda, you, which is Australian government Donna, that allows you to look into the date I'll of every university and all of the different discipline areas and what students have said about their experience.

  • One of the things that is come out really clearly is I've been walking around campus Just how much Southern cross is A real community here has a wonderful community environment, has real spirit.

  • So that also suggests you know it.

  • If rankings a critical for you.

  • Maybe this isn't the only institution, but if a sense of community and being part of a place, that sort of really engaging a woman friendly is valuable to you, this could definitely be an institution that you wanna have a look at.

  • So definitely look at rankings, but always bear in mind that rankings don't tell the full story.

  • All right, I got this Snowy might great to meet you.

  • Thanks for chatting.

  • Thanks for coming.

  • Cool.

  • What?

  • You study here some more, So I'm doing a bachelor of arts, and I am majoring in creative writing.

  • What's that?

  • Lucky.

  • Yeah, this has been the complete opposite experience to the 1st 1 I've but really good group of friends and made all the made all the connections, and I can handle the other people that I find, I guess to kind of, like, really kicked me.

  • And also the campus is like, amazing, like tucked into the select.

  • It was like rain forests and waterfalls around, So I don't know, it's been a really good fit.

  • And also the change away from the Gold Coast.

  • No, I wanted to get away.

  • And so I knew that there was the Gold Cross campus for Stu.

  • But I knew that I wanted to come somewhere that kind of felt like more of a kind of getting away type thing.

  • So, yeah, I can't say bad things at the lobby is amazing.

  • The grounds are amazing.

  • Kind of, Yeah, it's pretty easy.

  • Tell me about like, the kind of vibe on campus since a community, that sort of thing, like, What's it like being he people chilled people, Children like, you know, you see the same people.

  • That's like the funnest thing, this thing getting a copy from the same person and you kind of see the same people were quite tennis.

  • And there's a uni bar as well, which is kind of a place open mic nights.

  • People get up and perform said, There's that as well.

  • I don't know.

  • There's lots of little like things around also going to the waterfalls or something that somebody just do.

  • Yeah, there's not many universities in the country that have a waterfall.

  • Yeah, not on campus, but close enough close in 10 minutes down the road.

  • It's kind of an imperative.

  • Someone like that you're going to go into a waterfall because it's not.

  • Guess the Gold Coast have a beach and there's more.

  • Is there something that you you somewhat from here always like something that you'd heard about selling cross unity before he came here.

  • They're all they end up, turned out to be true or not true.

  • I just kind of surprised you're like, Oh, I wasn't expecting that.

  • That's a good question.

  • I guess it was sort of maybe just the grounds that not knowing with the actual university kind of was, but actually, I did kind of stop through here on my way.

  • I was in a great trip from the Gold Coast to Western Australia.

  • My van started uni, So, yeah, I stopped through and check out the campus, but I hadn't really heard anything about it.

  • My parents were kind of pushing me to go to cough that I mean, sorry, the gold Chris campus because it was close and it made sense to stay home.

  • But I Really I knew that I wanted to go to Southern Cross, but I think there's more isn't being.

  • I don't even know why I hadn't heard anything about it or anything like that.

  • Yeah, but I did come and check the campus, and it was like, This is six.

  • Yeah, outside of class.

  • Is that what other sorts of things are you involved in?

  • He you talked about a lot of stuff that's going on.

  • But you part of any clubs or would you go to the gym like What do you do?

  • Yeah, I do.

  • The chess club.

  • Yeah, I love chest.

  • And when I came here, there was There's all the infrastructure for a chess club, but it wasn't really a student to LeBron it, so I kind of just jumped into that.

  • And so is that, like, satisfy your physics?

  • Brian, You know, like I mean, sometimes it's a study a little bit, but yeah, definitely.

  • Keep that part of my brain going Yeah, the chests of his chest and then almost doing a student magazine fun.

  • There's really a creative student magazine on campus, so we've been working really hard to kind of get that out, get plenty to mission some short stories and poetry and stuff.

  • So we hope to publish a week next year, and you have involved with Lexa as well.

  • So there's like that, and they do the barbecues and movie nights and applause.

  • Are you stressed last week and there's a ball planned and they did a handball tournament last week.

  • So yeah, it is.

  • Yeah, that's hates like, I guess was the right time for me to come here and kind of engage with this stuff.

  • I was ready, but yeah, it's escapes.

  • Get involved.

  • Some across specifically, leaves more.

  • What kind of person would this place really safe?

  • Do you have a vision about that one?

  • I guess everyone is kind of pretty like, laid back and you get a lot people from kind of like Lennox.

  • And I'm sort of also, like, kind of like rural communities as well more so, But I mean, I'm from the Gold Coast and I love it because it's kind of, I don't know.

  • It's more, I guess.

  • But gold Chris is very like, very laid back.

  • But on this, most got this like, I don't know this chill community vibe like I know the world.

  • It's amazing infrastructure and, like on again, all the events happening around like the town.

  • So I just chill is not much traffic.

  • It's like laid back, and it kind of makes it very easy to study because it's like it's one minute I live one minute from the campus.

  • Amazing.

  • So boils at 40 minutes, drive through traffic and then an AL walk into the campus and you come back with a parking fine.

  • Had to live one minute from the campus of something that made it really easy.

  • Really easy to study.

  • Yeah, easy to find accommodation and stuff.

  • Exactly.

  • Super easy.

  • Yeah, combinations.

  • Really easy and cheap.

  • This is Ash.

  • Hi.

  • Hi.

  • Thanks for chatting.

  • Let's talk about Liz Morin.

  • Some across this more.

  • What's it like to study here?

  • I love it.

  • I love it.

  • Uh, I've had a lot of different experience from different universities.

  • He's a really, really intimate and friendly experience.

  • That's really it's exactly what I want.

  • It's what you want when you're really passionate about something that someone to really take the time and engage with you and help you get what you want to go.

  • So you find that people you've studied with professors off students are really taking that time to engage.

  • I feel they're helping me.

  • Don't believe it leaps and bounds At the start of the year, I was just All I had my sights on was conceding honors, and I've just gotten back from Malaysia, got scholarships, help me get a flat Thio University School of Leadership Symposium, which was amazing.

  • I have this opportunity where I might find me Columbo scholarship plan and ever, ever has just been really supportive.

  • Anything new that pops up because I'm trying that interest and that passion.

  • We're going out there to bring it to me.

  • I feel like you get that in the campus.

  • Is this something that So you studied other places.

  • What's different about he?

  • Then compared to other places you study, you don't have to.

  • Nine.

  • I have given intimacy.

  • You know, you're not, uh, number.

  • You know, a student number.

  • Your person with the life of a story that people want to he and care about students and teaches it feels more like a family.

  • Tell me about so these other things you've been involved in So you studied overseas.

  • Amazing.

  • What other sorts things are you involved in?

  • He Well, I don't have any on campus concessions anymore, because you're because of that.

  • Every week I organize catch up meeting in the library because it can be oscillating when you don't have contact on.

  • That's really cool, because you get to be around a bunch of different projects in 100 different people.

  • Different mind set for really passionate about what they're doing.

  • That's really cool.

  • So if if somebody was thinking about studying, he already, If you're thinking about it, just go do it.

  • And what about moving?

  • Because you've obviously moved tea from elsewhere?

  • Yeah.

  • What was that experience?

  • Look?

  • Well, I grew up here and moved away and came back for him.

  • I'm very strong affinity with this area of the beach.

  • I love the color on the floor and just has that kind of really nice vibe to it.

  • So even though there's no one here right now, hopefully going to get a sense of what it would be like buzzing for students.

  • Many different disciplines are available at Southern Cross across the various campuses.

  • Obviously, arts and social sciences, education environment very, very, very strong.

  • It's the only undergraduate forestry program in the country, and obviously Fortune Management's incredibly important health very well respected.

  • He across different health disciplines, nursing osteopathy.

  • I absolutely love osteopathy fee because there are only a couple of units in Australia that teach osteopathy and why osteo have always come from solving cross.
