  • It became the first foreign-language film to claim the award and the first South Korean film to win any Oscar ever.

  • I've been thinking a lot about some of the distressing issues that we are facing collectively, and I think at times we feel or are made to feel that we champion different causes.

  • But for me, I see commonality.

  • Many of us, what we're guilty of is an egocentric world view, the belief that we're the center of the universe.

  • We go into the natural world, and we plunder it for its resources.

  • We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow, and when she gives birth, we steal her baby, even though her cries of anguish are unmistakable.

  • And then we take her milk that's intended for her calf, and we put it in our coffee and our cereal.

  • Renée Zellweger won best actress for her role in Judy, which explores the tragic career and life of actress Judy Garland.

  • It is the second Oscar of Zellweger's career.

  • Miss Garland, you are certainly among the heroes who unite and define us, and this is certainly for you.

  • I am so grateful.

  • Brad Pitt snagged best supporting actor for his role in "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood."

  • He used part of his speech to address President Trump's impeachment trial.

  • They told me I only have 45 seconds up here, which is 45 seconds more than the Senate gave John Bolton this week.

  • Best supporting actress went to Laura Dern for her role in "Marriage Story."

  • You know, some say never meet your heroes, but I say if you're really blessed, you get them as your parents.

  • I share this with my acting heroes, my legends, Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern.

  • "1917," the World War I drama many picked to win best picture, won trophies for best cinematography, best sound mixing, and best visual effects.

  • Other highlights included: Sigourney Weaver, Brie Larson, and Gal Gadot praising their fellow female colleagues ahead of the best original score award.

  • Which went to Hildur Gudnadóttir for Joker.

  • She was just the seventh woman ever to be nominated in this category and only the fourth to win.

  • Best original song went to (I'm Gonna) Love Me Again in "Rocketman" by Elton John.

  • This was John's second Oscar.

  • There were also some surprises during the show, including Rebel Wilson and James Corden presenting the award for visual effects, dressed as cats in homage to box-office flop "Cats."

  • And the Oscar goes to...

  • But the biggest surpriseEminem's performance.

  • Some were shocked, some were excited.

  • The 47-year-old rapper performed his 2002 hit Lose Yourself.
