Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Idioms 282. The idiom today is to run late. Okay, Let's
take a look at the note here. If someone or something runs late it means that
he, she or it arrives or leaves later than the time expected and we do have a
second meaning here too. To run late could also mean to take longer than the
expected time. All right. Let's continue. This idea alludes to the fact that one
is behind schedule or will end up late for an appointment unless one can hurry,
move faster to make up time. Yeah. Whether you're late for an appointment or late
for work or late for school, you have to hurry because you are running late.
You're behind schedule. All right. Let's continue. We have three examples here to
cover these. Example number one. We are running late. We had better take a taxi
to make up time. Yeah. So this is what you could do maybe, if you're not too late,
you still might be able to try to move faster or go faster , make up enough time
and you still could possibly arrive on time. If you're able to move faster than
you usually do. Okay. But, you're still probably are leaving your house later
than you normally did. Or number two. The bus is running late. It was supposed
to be here ten minutes ago. And it's still not here. So it is running late. So
we often say something is running late. It's again, it's behind schedule. It was supposed
to be here already. All right. And number three here. This is
the one that we could say to run late could also mean to take longer than
expected. So the reason I didn't call you until now was because I was in a meeting
that ran late. So not only can people run late, a meeting could run late too. So the
meeting took longer than was originally scheduled or planned.
It was an hour longer than it was scheduled to be. So the meeting ran late.
So then I ended up making me late that's why I didn't contact you before time.
Okay. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it was clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
