  • Lead casting is reminiscent of decades 鉛字鑄造技術 勾起了人們

  • of heart-warming sentiments in printing, 對過去數十年來 印刷文化

  • its culture conveying nostalgia 所留下的感動與懷念,

  • and continuing the 而這樣的技藝

  • history of yesteryears. 至今仍延續著。

  • So far, there are five machines 目前有五件機具

  • that are designated as antique artifacts 被臺南市政府

  • by the Tainan City Government. 列為一般古物

  • From casting and formatting to paper-cutting and printing, 從鑄字、排版、裁紙、印刷

  • it cannot be more well-equipped here. 這裡該有的設備一應俱全

  • How was printing ever possible 在沒有電腦的時代

  • in an era without computers? 是怎麼印刷呢?

  • This is a hot metal typesetting machine, 這是一台鑄字機,

  • and it’s actually used to produce 用來鑄造

  • the type pieces used in the letterpress. 活字印刷機裡的鉛字塊

  • You can actually melt lead slugs here, 你可以把鉛塊放在這裡讓它融化,

  • and it injects it into these molds, 融化後的鉛會灌入模具中

  • and you make type setting pieces out of this. 並製成鉛字塊。

  • There must be thousands of type pieces here. 這裡大概有好幾千個鉛字吧!

  • What a majestic sight! 真的非常壯觀!

  • These pieces on the shelves were made at a time when 架上這些鉛字塊 都是以前

  • there were no access to computers. 電腦還不普及時 所刻好的字

  • Consequently, printing was done 當時的印刷,是把鉛字

  • with each word carefully carved, arranged, and aligned, 一個字一個字刻好 再手工排版

  • taking into consideration 包括標點符號、分隔線

  • punctuation marks and page margins. 間距、行距,和頁面邊界設定等等

  • Even after such a laborious process, 而且排好版後

  • a prepress proof much be done first. 還要先試印看看

  • This is a proofing machine, 這是一台打樣機,

  • and it’s for making sure that your set pieces are 用來確認在最後印刷前

  • placed correctly before it goes into the printing press. 所有鉛字塊都排列正確、沒有錯字。

  • This is our paper cutter. 這邊這台是我們的裁紙機

  • Before printing, 在印刷前

  • the papers must be the right size 要先把紙張大小裁好

  • and the job is done by this paper-cutter here, 這台裁紙機看起來

  • which looks similar to a modern paper-cutter, 和現代的裁紙機有點像

  • except it is not computerised. 不過,沒有電動功能

  • Well, it’s a paper cutter, 當然囉,這是一台裁紙機,

  • and unlike the ones you have in your office, 不同於一般辦公室常見的裁紙機

  • this one is humongous, and it’s really old. 這台機器非常大、也很古老

  • In fact, it's been listed as a city artifact by Tainan. 其實,它已經被臺南市列為市定文物了

  • After cutting the paper, 裁完紙張後

  • it is ready for printing. 接下來就可以準備印刷囉!

  • Oh hey, This is a letterpress machine. 喔,嘿。這是一台圓盤活字印刷機,

  • Kind of looks like a turntable, 看起來有點像唱盤機,

  • but it’s actually for printing 但其實是專門用來

  • thicker paper stocks, such as business cards. 印刷較厚的紙張,例如名片。

  • This machine here is 這台機器

  • a miniature letterpress machine 是迷你圓盤印刷機

  • that still works to this day. 到現在還可以印刷喔

  • This is a miniature version of the letterpress machine 這台機器是稍早那台

  • that we just saw earlier on, 圓盤活字印刷機的迷你版

  • and what you do is you just kind of 而你只需要用力地把它

  • press down with your weight. 往下壓 就可以了。

  • Here it is! 這樣就完成了!

  • The round disc above has ink on it, 上面的圓盤塗有油墨

  • and by lifting the handle up, 將機具把手往上推

  • the ink is evenly distributed on the roller. 滾筒就會均勻滾上油墨

  • Next, a formatted set plate is positioned, 接下來,擺上排好的鉛字版

  • and a piece of paper is placed over it. 再放入紙張

  • Finally, to complete the process, 將把手推到底

  • simply push the handle to the end. 就完成印刷囉

  • This printing press from the 50s is another one 這台50年代的印刷機是館內

  • of the city designated artifacts in this museum, 另外一台市定的歷史文物。

  • and this guy is perfect for mass producing fliers like this. 適合用來大量生產像這樣的傳單

  • It is a common misconception that letterpress prints 一般對活版印刷的印象

  • are done by the printing actions of a roller. 是滾筒壓印後看到成品

  • However, this printing machine is different 但是這台印刷機

  • from other letterpress machines. 和其他的壓印機不一樣

  • Instead, it implements a method 反而比較像是

  • that is more alike that of an ink-jet printer, 噴墨印表機

  • with paper placed in the front, 前端放上準備印刷的紙張

  • which is then processed by the 鉛字版則放在機器裡面

  • formatted set plate in the machine itself, 位置安排如同噴墨列印

  • and the finishing product exiting from the other side. 印完後 紙張從後端出來

  • This visit to the printing museum has been 這個印刷館真是

  • an eye-opening experience. 讓我大開眼界

  • It is next to impossible to imagine the era 真的很難想像當時

  • without computers 在沒有電腦輔助下

  • and when printing relied merely on letterpress pieces. 完全仰賴鉛字的印刷方式

  • Finding the right characters would be 光要找到對的字

  • a challenge in itself, 就是一種挑戰

  • let alone managing and organising 更別說是管理

  • so many character type pieces. 這麼多字了

  • If a character is not available, 如果是現場沒有的字

  • one can be made on site immediately. 還可以馬上造字

  • There are two casting machines accessible here. 這裡有兩台鑄字機

  • One made in Japan, 一台是日製

  • and the other made here in Taiwan, 一台是台製的

  • which comes equipped with lights, 台製的還增加了燈

  • making work a little more manageable. 讓工作更方便

  • In the early days of the sugar refinery, 早期糖廠除了印內部需要的印刷品外

  • in addition to making prints for its own use, 還另外接一些印刷案件

  • they also made other prints and flyers. 所以在這裡除了有鉛字之外

  • besides having the type pieces on display, 還有一些圖像

  • The museum also has a collection 也保留了當時印刷的版

  • of old fliers. 和宣傳品

  • Here, you can personally experience the fun of print making. 來這裡可以體驗版畫印刷的樂趣

  • First, transfer the ink on the roller onto a board, 先將滾筒滾上油墨

  • which then goes on another alignment board. 再將油墨滾上要印刷的版

  • Then, after placing a red envelope in position, 然後 把它放在對位板上

  • apply pressure evenly throughout with a baren, 再將紅包袋對齊對位板

  • which is a disk-like hand tool, 用馬連均勻壓印

  • to create your personalized red envelope. 就完成紅包袋的印刷作品

  • computerized seal-making 一切由電腦機械化

  • can be done quickly with ease, 非常方便快速

  • even giving rise to aluminum seals. 也改成鋁製印章

  • I’ve learned a great deal about the art and history 我在糖福印刷創意館學到了好多關於

  • of printing presses in the Tangfu Printing Press Museum, 印刷的工藝與歷史,

  • and the fact that its legacy remains in the form 今天這份工藝能夠通過新的科技,

  • of modern technology is amazing. 繼續發揚光大真的相當令人驚艷
