After 1 week in culture, 3D cell aggregates continue to grow and merge, forming larger

hepatospheres and other aggregate shapes. In 3 to 4 weeks, an engineered liver tissue

is formed in SeedEZ. Liver 3D culture is a useful model for in

vitro toxicology and ADME/Tox screening. Liver specific functions, expression and secretion

of drug metabolizing enzymes decline rapidly in 2D culturing conditions. Studies suggest

that by culturing liver cells in 3D as organotypic aggregates preserves these functions.
