  • When you think about Art and Technology, you're basically looking at the nexus

  • of high technology and the arts

  • [Music]

  • My name is Ken Rinaldo

  • and I'm a Professor in the Art and Technology program

  • in the Department of Art. We teach 3d modeling. We teach animation

  • We teach rapid prototyping and we teach robotics and we teach

  • you how to use the world wide web as a tool of promotion

  • but also as a tool of expression for making

  • socially engaged works of art. What our students learn in these programs basically

  • is they learn to read schematics,

  • they learn to solder, they learn the language

  • of how a schematic will relate to a physical thing

  • It's very important for us in Art and Technology to help our students to

  • decode what's happening in a computer and to use that to make something new,

  • to invent something new. One of the the recent installations that I did was

  • a very large installation of six

  • custom robotic arms. This was a commission from the city of Toronto

  • for a very large event called Nuit Blanche, where over

  • two and a half million people came out to celebrate contemporary arts.

  • ASC Tech was absolutely critical in allowing me to move forward with this work

  • because I was working with some software called Max/MSP and Jitter

  • but also working with robotic and using

  • Mac minis with solid-state drives in order to allow the robots to move and communicate

  • and the ASCTech team was just sent fantastic in helping me to achieve this project

  • in introducing me to some software for example that would allow

  • remote viewing, integrating it with sound software programs for example

  • all these things were so important but ASCTech

  • has also been so important for our program because we're really the largest

  • program in teaching 3d modeling and animation in the College of the Arts

  • and ASC Tech has been so incredibly supportive in

  • allowing us to try new forms of software,

  • experimental software, but also supporting the

  • 280 students that we're teaching every semester

  • in our program in order that they can become

  • professional artists, professional animators, professional 3D modelers,

  • professional rapid prototyping artists as well.
