  • Hello everyone! This is Andrew again

  • from Crown Academy of English and today

  • we are going to do a lesson on

  • the bedroom. So you're going to learn

  • lots of words of items

  • in the bedroom. Let's get started!

  • So,

  • here we are inside a typical

  • bedroom and

  • the first thing that we can see here is of course

  • the bed. So this is the bed

  • in the middle of the room.

  • And this type of bed

  • is called a "double bed" because

  • two people sleep in this bed.

  • Okay, so a double bed

  • is for two people and

  • a single bed is for one person.

  • And here...

  • at the end of the bed

  • is a pillow. So

  • we use a pillow... we put our head

  • on the pillow when we go to sleep...

  • And in fact, there are

  • two pillows. There is a pillow on the left

  • and a pillow on the right. And

  • also, in this bedroom, we can see

  • there is a wardrobe. We use

  • a wardrobe to put our clothes in.

  • So we store

  • clothes in a wardrobe okay.

  • Here, we can see on this picture,

  • this is called the headboard. A headboard.

  • So this is the board at the...

  • at the top of the bed behind

  • the pillows. So this is used

  • as decoration. It goes between the wall

  • and the bed.

  • And on the left, on

  • both... usually on both sides of the bed, we put

  • a bedside table. A bedside table.

  • And we use the bedside table

  • for... we we can often put

  • things on the bedside table.

  • For example, a book

  • or maybe a glass of water or an alarm clock.

  • And so here, we can see another view

  • of the bedside table. So

  • here in fact there is a bedside table

  • on both sides of the bed.

  • This bedside table is made out of wood and

  • on it, there is a lamp. So there is a lamp on

  • the bedside table.

  • And also, there is an alarm clock. An alarm clock.

  • So we use an alarm clock so that we can tell the time.

  • So that we can know what time it is...

  • and also so that we can wake up

  • in the morning. The alarm clock

  • rings an alarm in the morning to wake us up.

  • This alarm clock is a DIGITAL alarm clock.

  • But we can also have a different type of alarm clock... like

  • this one. This is an older, mechanical alarm clock.

  • And here, on this picture, again we can see

  • the pillows. So there's a pillow

  • on the left and a pillow

  • on the right. And also,

  • behind the pillows,

  • above the headboard,

  • there is a picture....ok.

  • So that is a picture...

  • and in fact there are several

  • pictures and these

  • are pictures of butterflies. To the right

  • of the bed, above

  • the bedside table, there is

  • another lamp. So this is

  • a lamp on the right... and here,

  • we can see on the bed, in black,

  • that is a sheet. So this

  • is a sheet. And we put a sheet

  • on the bed to protect the bed.

  • And so here, on this bed, we can see

  • that there is a duvet.

  • So a duvet is

  • in fact what is inside

  • the red and white cover.

  • So in fact here,

  • there is a duvet .. and

  • a duvet cover. So

  • the duvet cover is

  • the red and white thing

  • that we can see. And

  • the duvet is inside the duvet cover.

  • So here, we cannot in fact see the duvet.

  • It is inside the duvet

  • cover. Listen carefully

  • to how we pronounce "duvet". We do not

  • pronounce the letter "t" at the end. Okay, it is a silent

  • "t". So we say "duvet"

  • So here, this is another view

  • of the duvet. So this

  • is what is inside the duvet cover.

  • This is the duvet.

  • This is the white item that we put

  • on the bed to keep us warm at night.

  • There is another word for "duvet".

  • We can also call a duvet a "quilt"

  • A "quilt". Now I think the word "quilt" is used

  • more in... in Britain, in England.

  • It is more of a British

  • English word. And duvet

  • is more international... okay... but they both

  • mean the same thing. Duvet or quilt.

  • Both words are correct.

  • Here is a blanket.

  • This is a red blanket... and

  • we put a blanket on the bed, often

  • in winter, when it is cold and we put it

  • on top of the duvet to keep us warm.

  • And here.. there is .. this is another view

  • of the bed and here,

  • you can see that we have pulled

  • the duvet to one side.

  • So we have pulled the duvet

  • to the middle of the bed... and here we can see

  • the "sheet". So this is

  • the sheet which goes on the bed,

  • to protect the bed. And this is

  • a white sheet.

  • So this is a sheet: S H E E T.

  • And, we put the sheet on a mattress.

  • So this is the mattress.

  • So this is what the bed looks like

  • without the sheet. Okay...

  • we call this a mattress.

  • Here, in white, this is the pillow.

  • So, the pillow is where we put our head

  • when we go to sleep... and

  • we put the pillow inside a pillowcase.

  • So the pillowcase is the item

  • which goes outside of the pillow.

  • It protects the pillow and it decorates

  • the pillow. As you can see,

  • the pillowcase has the same

  • design as the duvet case.

  • So the duvet case and the pillowcase

  • are the same. So we can say

  • they are MATCHING. They are MATCHING.

  • because they are the same.

  • Here, we can see a single bed.

  • A single bed is a bed for one person. One person

  • sleeps in a single bed... and

  • again, this is the headboard.

  • Here, we have some bunk beds. Bunk beds.

  • Bunk beds are two beds with

  • one bed on top of another bed.

  • So here, this is the top bunk bed

  • and this one is the bottom bunk bed. And

  • to be able to get to the top

  • bunk bed, we use a ladder. So we use

  • a ladder to climb up to the top bunk bed.

  • And so here, we can see a wardrobe.

  • A wardrobe. We put clothes

  • inside a wardrobe. So we use

  • a wardrobe to store our clothes.

  • On the front of this wardrobe, there is a mirror.

  • We use a mirror to look at ourselves -

  • - to look at our clothes.

  • Okay so a mirror.

  • We use a mirror to look at ourself.

  • And this wardrobe

  • has two doors. There is a door here

  • and there is a door here.

  • And on the front of both doors, there is a handle.

  • So we use a handle to open the door and to close the door.

  • And here we are looking inside a wardrobe.

  • And at the top, there is a clothes rail, clothes rail.

  • So the clothes rail is the metal bar which goes across

  • the top of the wardrobe.

  • And on the clothes rail, we use a hanger.

  • So we put hangers on the clothes rail to hang our clothes on.

  • So we hang clothes on the hanger.

  • This is called a hanger

  • or sometimes we can call it

  • a clothes hanger. Ok.. and

  • on this hanger, there is a white

  • shirt and

  • at the bottom of the wardrobe, there are

  • some trousers. In English,

  • when we talk about trousers, even if there is just

  • one, we use the expression

  • "a pair of trousers" Okay..

  • so now I am wearing a pair of trousers.

  • So we say the word "pair"

  • for one pair of trousers.

  • And here, this is a shoe rack.

  • Shoe rack. We use a shoe rack

  • to store our shoes.

  • And again, this is a pair of shoes. So here

  • there is one pair of brown shoes,

  • and here, we have one pair of black shoes.

  • So here, this is called a chest of drawers.

  • So this big piece of white furniture. This item

  • is called a chest of drawers.

  • And, the chest of drawers has three drawers.

  • So, this drawer at the top,

  • then there is a drawer in the middle and a drawer at the bottom.

  • And we can see the top drawer is currently open.

  • On top of the chest of drawers, there are some

  • candles. So this is a candle.

  • And over in

  • the corner of the room, we can see

  • there is an armchair. An armchair

  • is a comfortable chair for one person.

  • Here.. this object here...

  • this big, white object...

  • we call this a dressing table. A dressing table. So very often...

  • a dressing table is used by a lady or a girl who

  • is putting on makeup, for example, or maybe drying her hair.

  • So always on a dressing table, there is a table and

  • also a mirror. There is usually a large mirror

  • on a dressing table. And here, in front of the dressing table, is a chair.

  • And hanging on the wall, we have a clothes hanger.

  • This is a hanger.

  • And finally, we have a lamp. In fact, there are

  • two lamps - one on both sides of the dressing table.

  • So, on this photograph, in front of the window,

  • there are some curtains.

  • So we use curtains to decorate

  • the front of the window and also

  • to stop light coming into the room.

  • Again, we use the expression a "pair

  • of curtains". A "pair of curtains"

  • because there are two curtains.

  • One on the left and

  • one on the right. And

  • we attach curtains to a curtain rail.

  • So the curtain rail is

  • the bar which goes across the top,

  • above the window. And here,

  • on the right hand side, to the right of

  • the curtains, we can see there are

  • some hats. And the top hat,

  • this one, is a grey hat.

  • Here, this is a cot. A cot

  • And a cot is for babies

  • or very very young children. So babies

  • sleep in a cot. And a cot has vertical

  • bars down the side and

  • very high sides to prevent the baby from

  • leaving the cot.

  • So a cot is to help keep a baby safe.

  • And here is a teddy bear!

  • A teddy bear! So a teddy bear

  • is for a baby or for a child...

  • or even for an adult! You never know :-)

  • So a teddy bear is a toy.

  • And finally, something else that we often use

  • when we are in the bedroom is

  • a "pair of slippers". A "pair of slippers"

  • So slippers are comfortable shoes

  • which we wear indoors. So they are comfortable

  • shoes which we wear inside the house.

  • So, there we are! That's the end of the lesson.
