The imperative

Stop saying "thank you." In today's video, I'm going to teach you several useful alternatives to the words "thank you." And just to be clear, there's nothing wrong with "thank you," but sometimes it's nice to spice things up a little bit and to expand our vocabulary.

So let's get into the video and learn what you can say instead.

First of all, "thank you" is the standard form.

The more informal way of saying this would be "thanks." Often you'll see "thanks" written as T-H-X.

This is how a lot of native speakers text.

Something you won't see as often is T-K-S.

I see this a lot from non-native speakers,

but to be honest, I've never seen this from a native English speaker.

It's much more common for native speakers to write T-H-X when they're texting.

It doesn't mean it's wrong, but I haven't seen it from a native speaker.

So my recommendation would be, if you're texting somebody and you want to appear more natural, you can write T-H-X.

And if you're in a casual conversation with somebody, you can say thanks, thanks a lot, thanks so much, thanks very much, or even thanks a bunch.

These are more informal conversational alternatives.

In the UK, a lot of people would say cheers.

I'm from Canada, and here we don't say cheers as a synonym of thank you.

The only time we would say cheers is when we're celebrating and drinking.

But in the UK, cheers also means thank you.

You might also say, "You're the best." I owe you one.

Or if you want to be a bit more dramatic, you could say, "You're a lifesaver." To express even stronger gratitude, you could say, "I can't thank you enough.

I'm truly thankful." Or, "I'm very grateful." Grateful is a synonym of thankful,

So if you show gratitude, you show thanks.

You can say thank you, you can buy them a gift, you can show them your gratitude in many different ways.

What if you're sending an email, you're talking to your colleagues, you're talking to your boss?

What could you say that sounds more professional and more formal?

Well, a common alternative would be, "I really appreciate that." Much appreciated.

And if you want to be really formal, you could say, "Allow me to express my sincere gratitude.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks." Or, "Please accept my heartfelt thanks." This one's very strong.

Let's say you're writing an email and you want to express your gratitude.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation for your time and support.

That's quite a formal and professional way of saying thank you.

Again, there's nothing wrong with the words thank you, but

sometimes, as I said, it's nice to spice things up a little bit, to expand your vocabulary,

and to express your thanks in a different way.
