We do research, but what other verbs do we use with research?

We could also say you conduct research; they mean the same.

No one has carried out research on this area before.

We're conducting the first major research on this topic.

She's undertaking some important research.

When talking about it, we often want to say what research is based on.

This research is based on data from our experiments.

Then, it's all about how certain you are.

Maybe your research proves something, shows something, or reveals something.

Maybe it just suggests something if you're not so sure.

My research proves that my theory is correct.

Her research suggests that things are much more complicated than we thought.

So, you can undertake research, base it on data, and see if it proves or suggests something.

A role is the behaviour of a person in a specific situation.

If you play a role, you might be part of a play or a film.

and she's going to play the role of Wendy in Peter Pan in the play this winter.

That means that you do certain jobs or tasks.

He's normally a teacher, but he's been performing the role of student since starting French classes.

If you take on a role, you do a task or job that you don't normally do.

Louise is taking on the role of manager for the next six months.

This means you are the person that says what the responsibilities and tasks are of a particular position, often a job.

The company have never had a mental health ambassador before.

John's been given the job, so he'll define the role.

Something that is well organised, or has something supporting it, has structure.

That's when something is badly organised or unsupported.

The story has a clear structure: a beginning, middle, and end.

To make sure that something doesn't lack structure, we can take the time to create a suitable structure, or devise a suitable structure.

Work can feel overwhelming if you don't create a structure to help you deal with it.

There's a lot going on, but we've devised a structure for the day, so it should make sense.

You impose a structure if it takes a lot of effort, or if you face resistance.

The new coach worked hard to impose a structure on the team so that they would stop losing.

If your English study lacks structure, see if you can devise one that will help you.

If you collect or gather data, you search for it yourself.

For example, this could be by asking people questions or looking at databases online.

I've been gathering data on breakfast choices by asking people what they have for breakfast.

When you have your answers or figures, you might enter that data into a computer system.

I've been entering data into this spreadsheet all day.

This means you analyse it to see what it means.

It looks like most people in the BBC have cornflakes for breakfast.

You might then present the data to colleagues or a company that want the information.

I'm presenting my breakfast data to the cereal company.

An office is a place in a building where some people work.

If you go to the office, this emphasises the journey there.

Whereas, if you go into the office, this is more about entering the building.

I usually go into the office after buying a coffee.

When you reach the office after travelling, you can say you arrive at the office or get to the office.

What time do you usually get to the office?

I usually arrive at the office around 9:00 a.m.

Then, I leave the office around 6:00 p.m.

If you're responsible for organising the office, you might manage or run the office.

She plans training for employees and organises office documents.

So, you can go to the office, go into the office, arrive at, and leave the office.

Students write papers, but what other verbs can we use?

When you're preparing a paper, you start by drafting it.

I've drafted a paper, but I don't like it yet.

I'm preparing a paper for the next class.

If it's good, you might deliver it or present it at a conference.

If you want to do that, then you have to put it forward first.

I've put forward a paper for a conference next year.

He delivered the paper to some of the most important experts.

If you want other people to read it, then you need to publish your paper.

Releasing a paper or issuing a paper means the same thing.

The university published a paper on sustainability.

The research team issued a paper with their findings.

They released it in an important journal.
