Okay, no, that's rice, which I would not feel the need to say in Spanish.

Okay, yes, technically, but not the one I'm talking about.

I'm talking about, like, a bouquet of roses.

This iconic flower symbolizes love, passion, and, for a short time, social-democratic political protest in France during the 1960s and '70s.

Chances are, if you've sent flowers, or had them sent to you, or just seen them around, there was a rose involved.

They're the most popular cut flower in the world,

and there is one country that likes these delicate stems above everybody else.

Hint: it's the same one where the average person also eats 150 hamburgers per year.

But this rose didn't grow in this vase, and it didn't grow down this street.

In fact, it didn't even grow at this nearby nursery.

It grew here, in the misted highlands of Colombia, which is a long, long way for a fresh flower to travel and still look this good and also not be straight-up dead.

Back in the '90s, Colombians started exporting all kinds of flowers to the United States to shift their economics away from that other popular export they had.

Thanks to the Andean Trade Preference Act instituted in 1991, Colombia enjoyed eliminated tariffs,

and then this was made official in 2012 with the Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement, which essentially eliminated tariffs between the countries.

imports about 80% of our cut flowers from other countries,

and Colombia alone accounts for a ton of that about 60% of the total cut flower market stateside.

So how did this rose end up in this vase just days after it was picked from this greenhouse?

But a complex and carefully orchestrated system of cold storage that starts the moment the rose, or any other flower, is harvested.

In the first two months of 2026, an estimated 1.3 billion flowers were imported into the United States, just in time for an estimated 98% of husbands and boyfriends to forget to buy them until 5:15 p.m.

other popular export countries such as Ecuador and Mexico, historically cut the flowers and then pack them by type so that the bouquets could be arranged in the United States.

But now, to increase efficiency, flowers are actually cut, separated,

and assembled into bouquets by factories in their home countries before they travel.

Now, if you and your skin and mouth have ever taken a long-haul flight, you know how dehydrated you get en route to your destination.

When that applies to you, you're uncomfortable and your breath stinks,

But when it happens to a flower, it ends up looking like this and it can't be sold anymore.

So before hitting the proverbial road, flowers undergo a rehydration process soaking them in a solution of water and liquid conditioner with sugars that keeps their colors vibrant, citric acid to lower their pH level, and

preservatives to prevent bacteria from forming in their water.

This special sauce perks them up before they're packed in tight cardboard boxes,

and if they're stored at all, it's in a cold storage refrigerator at 35 degrees Fahrenheit.

Most often, though, they're immediately transported in cold storage trucks to a cargo plane that, much like any one on the eastern seaboard around spring break, is bound for Miami well, 88% of the time anyway.

An estimated 1,700 cargo flights left Bogotá alone to supply one Valentine's Day, importing more than 150 million bouquets to the United States.

Once planes land in Miami, the cut flowers go through U.S.

customs and border protection, where men with little magnifying glasses inspect them for pests and invasive bugs,

and if they clear that inspection, they're off on a quintessential American road trip in refrigerated reefer trucks.

More than 30 companies orchestrate these trips, distributing flowers across the country lightning-fast so they're still looking alive by the time they get to you, despite being, you know, long dead.

First, there's wholesale handoffs to large commercial floral companies, including online behemoths that fill those orders in a "forgot your birthday" pinch and resell them.

Then there are grocery and drug stores think King Soopers, Walmart, Costco which account for roughly 40% of the market and essentially act as the middlemen getting bouquets to customers.

And finally, there's distribution to smaller, more locally-based floral shops that can deliver on their own or be contracted for same-day delivery.

This is the way the Floral Freight Express works in North America, built on economies of scale through several severely efficient checkpoints and distribution networks.

In Europe, another primary importer of flowers, it works similarly in receiving flowers grown in Africa and then sent throughout the northern countries.

So flowers you smell in the afternoon in Denmark might have been picked that morning in Ethiopia.
