Now, NASA is currently in the long process of rolling out the Artemis II rocket from its warehouse to the launch pad at the Kennedy Center.

Getting ready for an historic mission to the moon.

NASA's mega rocket stands almost 100 metres tall.

It's carried on a special crawler transporter at a top speed of 1 mile an hour for its return to the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center.

The last time astronauts visited the lunar surface was in 1972 for the Apollo 17 mission.

When the crew left, no one imagined it would take more than half a century for humans to go back.

Houston for the Artemis 2 mission, the crew won't be landing.

Instead, over the course of 10 days, the astronauts will fly around the far side of the moon and break the record for the furthest distance any humans have travelled from Earth.

The crew have spent nearly three years preparing for their voyage.

They are NASA's mission commander Reid Wiseman, Canadian astronauts Jeremy Hansen, and

American astronauts Victor Glover and Christina Cook.

Before they head for the moon, their journey starts in orbit around the Earth.

We're going to be going into an orbit almost right away that is 4,40,000 miles, like a fifth of the way to the moon.

Just in and of itself, we will have the Earth out the window as a single ball, something none of us have seen.

And then we're going to travel a quarter of a million miles away.

We're going to do a lot of science and operations along the way that will inform even going deeper.

The US isn't the only country focused on the moon.

China plans to land people there by 2030.

NASA is under pressure to get there first and is planning to eventually build a lunar base.

Technical problems have delayed the Artemis launch plans, but

engineers are confident the rocket is now ready to go.

NASA says they're on course for a launch in early April to begin their journey to the moon.
