Researchers in Spain have developed artificial corneas from fish scales.

This discovery could potentially become a low cost alternative to donor transplants.

Scientists at the University of Granada announced that they have created corneal implants that are highly biocompatible, transparent and resistant.

The fish scales were from species commonly found in markets like carp.

The cornea, the eyes transparent front layer, is difficult to repair when badly damaged because it has no blood vessels and limited regenerative capacity.

Severe corneal disease is often treated with donor transplants, which can be constrained by organ availability and waiting lists.

But research co author Ingrid Garson said scales could provide an easily available, inexpensive alternative, all while boosting the local fishing industry.

So far, the team said, it's produced good results for animals that have received the implants.

While this suggests it could be useful for corneal repair and regeneration, the technology currently remains far from possible.
