We were blessed by Papa Tim with what I'd say is probably the most exciting update to the Mac lineup we've seen in quite some time.

We got a brand new M5 MacBook Air as well as new M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pros, which honestly look ridiculous.

I'll break those down in a separate video.

So if you're excited for that, make sure you guys go Barry Sanders on that like button.

But beyond that, we also saw two brand new displays.

If I'm being honest, two new displays is a bit of a stretch because in reality it's a small bump.

Refresh the Studio Display and then what's actually new, Apple debuted the Studio Display xdr, which looks insane.

Tim Cook, my guy, have you seen the price of groceries?

This news also sadly puts to rest our dear friend the Pro Display xdr, which is officially discontinued as of today.

And I think that's the most important thing to keep in mind because apart from screen size and real estate, the Studio Display XDR is better than the Pro Display XTR in every possible way at a fraction of the price.

And it includes the freaking stand so you could roast apple until the cows come home.

But I think they objectively make some of the best displays on earth and these are no different.

While the regular Studio Display update is no doubt a little underwhelming, if you had been looking to pick one up but hadn't, now it's absolutely more compelling.

I really miss the functionality that Apple brought with the older Thunderbolt display, where not only you got a great display and you also got an expansion with things like Ethernet and obviously more ports.

Some might call it the golden age Shout out Detroit Borg, but

to me, I think it was really the expansion that was always missing from the original Studio Display.

If it had added an SD card slot, Ethernet, or maybe an extra Thunderbolt port, then all of a sudden that's an instant value add.

And while sadly we still don't have an SD card slot or Ethernet, at the very least, we now have a second Thunderbolt 5 port, which I think is huge.

So what that means is you can now finally daisy chain multiple displays, up to four in fact.

So if you wanna be Mr. Tybox or just work in the matrix now, you can.

If anybody out there remembers the LG 24 inch, 4k and 27 inch 5k ultrafine monitors.

They weren't the most aesthetically pleasing displays, but in terms of actual quality and features, so freaking good.

What was really special about that 24 inch 4K model though, is unlike its bigger brother, the 27 inch model, and

it packed a second Thunderbolt port, just like we see on the new Studio displays.

I'm definitely more of a single monitor kind of guy, so you're probably not gonna see me stacking multiple displays.

But why it's exciting to me and why I loved that LG Ultrafine is with that second Thunderbolt port that gave you the ability to use it with something like an external Thunderbolt drive, which you could leave at your desk.

And that really just took the one cable theme, especially if you're using a MacBook or over the top.

So, for example, this is a really, really, really fast external Thunderbolt drive from owc, which does not work with USB C.

So therefore I cannot plug this into the original Studio display.

Alternatively, I have this Pegasus Thunderbolt RAID array, which is absolutely fast enough to edit directly off of, but

I end up using it more as an archival backup system just because I don't want it taking up a port off my MacBook Pro.

And again, I could not plug this into the original Studio display, but

But if I had that second Thunderbolt port, it would make things so much simpler.

Speaking of simpler, before I really dive into the Studio display xdr, I wanna quickly give a quick shout out to today's sponsor, Incogni.

Okay, so let's talk about that Studio display XDR which starts at 32.99 US, which is like Remember though, if we compare it to the now laid to rest Pro display xdr, it doesn't quite fully take away all the pain, but

To reiterate, the only advantage the Pro Display XDR has over the Studio display XDR is screen size.

So if you enjoy big ass screens, you're probably going to be a little sad.

But again, outside that, the Studio display XDR smokes it in every possible way.

So let's start with SDR brightness because that's most likely what you're going to be using most of the time when you're navigating through things like macOS.

The Pro Display XDR which started at US$5,000 without a stand, comes in at 500 nits, whereas the Studio display XDR comes in double that at 1000 nits.

To quickly sprinkle in a little food for thought, even when you compare the regular Studio display that comes in at 600 nits of brightness.

If you were like whoa, I didn't know that to sprinkle in even a little more food for thought, if you compare even the baseline Studio display to some of the top alternative monitor options, it's actually quite surprising whether it's from BENQ or LG or asus.

When you actually jump into the fine print and the tech specs and take a closer look at what those brightnesses are, it's usually getting smoked by even the Studio display.

Side note, I am curious on the webcam improvements on the newer Studio display, both regular and xdr because this current one, it's not the worst, but

If we take a closer look at Even like this BenQ PD2730s which is a 27 inch 5k display and we scroll over to the deep dive section, maximum brightness is 400 nits and this is a thirteen hundred dollar display.

So again, once you really start to compare Studio display versus comparable options, it's better than you think.

Hopping over to this ASUS ProArt PA32QCV, this is a bigger display at 31.5 inches it is 6K, but

if we hop over to the specs to check out brightness max brightness in peak HDR is 600 nits, but

your normal SDR sustained brightness, that's 400 nits.

Once again I remember seeing this option.

The Samsung Viewfinity S9 27 inch 5K monitor, this guy is 1599.

I saw it as low as 1300 bucks on Amazon, but it's still a pricey boy.

Now as we dive deeper, this does hold up with 600 nits of brightness, but

I don't know why you would grab this for the same price, especially with the newer updates, because I know the speakers on the Studio Display are going to beat this for sure.

From there though, we are not even close to being done because if you think about what made the Pro Display XDR special at the time, it was the brightness and its HDR capabilities, it could dish out a thousand nits sustained and up to 1600 nits of peak brightness, which was and still is ridiculous.

The Studio Display XDR though said hold my beer, I'll take your 1600 nits of peak brightness and raise it to 2000 nits of peak brightness.

With the Pro Display XDR, you didn't get a webcam, you didn't get very good speakers.

And what is max pain to me, those USB ports on the back, USB 2.0, which really just murdered my soul.

With the Studio Display xdr, you get the webcam, you get great speakers, you get two fast USB C ports.

Again those two Thunderbolt 5 ports, which is huge.

You get roughly four times the amount of dimming zones compared to the Pro Display XDR because of mini led.

And to ice the cake, to add the cherry on top, finally 120Hz refresh rate.

That right there along with the brightness is ultimately what's going to separate the Studio Display XDR from the regular Studio display.

I think if Apple really just made the Brightness the difference maker, that would have made the regular Studio display a little more compelling and less to get mad at.

I understand that there are different needs for different people and if you're someone who really values curved displays or ultra wide displays or high refresh rates and these are not going to be for you, but

if that is not your thing and you just want really amazing looking displays with also really amazing functionality, then these really hit the nail on the head.
