But half the time we can't even find our keys, much less our drive.

Some days, some years, some projects, you feel great.

You know exactly why what you're doing matters and you have momentum.

Other times, some days, some years, some projects, you feel lost, confused, stuck.

After two decades of studying human behavior, interviewing scientists, reading thousands of studies and writing books about motivation and work, I've discovered that there are seven distinct levels of motivation.

Seven ways we move through the world from barely surviving to fully alive.

Most people get stuck at level two or three, which is why you feel lost.

But the rare ones who make it to level seven, they change everything for themselves and everyone around them.

So in this video, I'll walk you through each level and show you how to climb from the bottom to the top.

You just punch in, do the minimum required to avoid getting in trouble and count the hours until you leave.

But staying here when you don't have to, that's dangerous.

Research from Edward Deasi and Richard Ryan, the creators of self determination theory, show that fear based motivation increases stress, lower satisfaction and and hurts performance on any task requiring creativity or judgment.

At this level, you're moving, but you're not moving forward.

To climb out of level one, you need something to reach for, not just something to avoid.

But when the reward disappears, so does the motivation.

Because this isn't self directed behavior.

In a famous Stanford study by Mark Lepper, when kids who love to draw were promised a reward for drawing more.

If you do this, then you get that they lost interest in drawing when the rewards were removed.

If then rewards and extinguished their interest and ultimately eroded their motivation.

Bribery buys effort, but it can't buy excellence.

Contingent rewards often narrow focus, shrink creativity and turn play into labor.

To climb higher, you need something deeper.

Now you're motivated by what others think.

Your boss's approval, your parents pride, your followers Applause.

The applause, the respect, the validation.

Everybody wants to be seen and valued and.

And this level of motivation can inspire collaboration and accountability.

But this level is brittle because you've outsourced your motivation.

From the outside, level three can look like success.

Research shows this kind of external motivation increases stress and burnout.

To move up, you have to shift the source of your drive, the from their expectations to your values.

You want to win, to excel, to prove yourself.

The chase, the competition, the satisfaction of crossing the finish line.

Psychologists call this the arrival fallacy.

The belief that once you reach the goal, you'll find finally feel fulfilled.

You win the award or capture the prize, and for one brief, shining moment, it feels amazing.

Then the feeling fades and you're already asking, what's next?

Hey, I felt this myself when one of my books first hit the best seller list.

Then I started worrying about staying on the list the next week.

Achievement can sharpen your edge, yes, but it can also dull your soul.

It's a fine level to visit, but a painful one to live in.

To level up, you have to trade the hunger for validation for the hunger for growth.

It's less about the quest for achievement and more about the relentless pursuit of excellence.

Less about the finish line, more about the path.

You're motivated by the challenge, not the trophy.

A writer tweaking one perfect sentence, A coder solving a problem just because it's interesting.

Here you find what scientists call the Goldilocks zone, where the challenges are not too easy, not too hard.

Repetition, frustration, incremental improvement.

This level produces mastery, real expertise.

The kind of performance that looks like magic to everyone else, but

that's built on years of deliberate struggle.

And once you feel this level, once you taste true growth, winning starts to matter.

At this level, it's less about you and more about who you serve.
