So in this English lesson, I wanted to teach you two phrases that we use in kind of a unique situation.

The superlative

And in my opinion, they're two of the nicest phrases that we ever say in the English language.

Past simple

Now, the situation where you use these phrases is at the end of a conversation that you've had with someone who you know well but haven't seen for a while.

So a good example would be if I haven't seen my aunt in a very long time, and

this actually happened the other day, and

if I have a little conversation with her and we catch up on what's been going on in our lives and we stand and talk.

We stand and talk for a little while, and it's very, very enjoyable.

At the end of the conversation as we're saying goodbye to each other, because I really like my aunt and enjoy talking to her, I will most likely say, enjoy, it was good seeing you again, or it was great to see you, or it was really nice seeing you.

This is just a very, very nice phrase to use.

Essentially, it means that you really like the person and obviously you really, really enjoyed talking to them.

So if you meet someone and you have a conversation with them in English, and

it's someone you know well and someone you really enjoy spending time with, and

you haven't seen them for a while, at the end of the conversation, you could say one of those three variations of the phrase, it was good seeing you.

The second phrase is very similar, but it's a little more.

I guess I would say the next phrase is the phrase, it was nice talking, or it was nice chatting.

So let's say I run into an old friend while I'm walking in town, and

As I leave, I might say, well, I gotta go.

It was nice talking, or it was nice chatting with you.

It was very, very fun having a conversation with you.

By the way, that last one, I wouldn't say that's more of the description.

The phrase is definitely, it was nice chatting or it was nice talking with you.

So I think these phrases are just really, really good to learn.

I know they won't be used a lot, necessarily, in your English conversations, but

they certainly communicate a positive feeling towards the person.

And they're not formal or anything like that.

I could say to my aunt, it was good seeing you.

It was nice seeing you, I could say it to a former person that I used to work with.

If I was talking to a former employer or a former boss, I could say, hey, it was nice seeing you again.

Or it was nice seeing you, it was good to see you.

And then again, if I ran into my brother, who maybe I haven't seen for a couple weeks, and

we started talking about old times, at the end of the conversation, I could say, hey, it was nice chatting.

By the way, chatting is just another word for talking.

We have a couple of different verbs for that to describe that kind of thing, that kind of conversation.
