We begin, of course, with the latest on that major winter blast slamming the Northeast.

It is the second serious snowstorm to hit the area in less than a month and the first blizzard to impact the region in almost a decade.

And all of that snow and those strong winds are making travel treacherous.

We have team coverage in place to bring you the latest on this developing storm.

First, we begin with NBC's Emily Ikeda, who is not far from us right here in, in New York City's Central Park.

Well, snow is everywhere you turn and you can see the weight of it on the trees behind me.

New York City issuing a rare travel ban through noon today to keep people off the roads and at home and safe.

It's the combination of those really strong wind gusts and the Snowfall rates exceeding 2 inches an hour that's crippling travel across the Northeast for so many people.

Seven governors declaring states of emergency as this monster storm rolls through this morning.

Tens of millions, millions waking up to whipping winds and blinding snow as a life threatening nor' easter barrels up the east coast, burying Philadelphia, New York and Boston in potentially a foot of snow or worse.

Snow lighting up the sky and impacting visibility as you can see from Earth Cam atop the Statue of Liberty.

At least seven governors declaring states of emergency, including New Jersey, which had its first blizzard warning for the entire state in three decades.

This storm faces more risks than the last one because of the blizzard conditions and the heavy winds.

Powerful wind gusts up to 75 miles an hour causing concerns including coastal flooding from Maryland to Maine.

Widespread power outages made worse by downed trees due to heavy snow and treacherous travel on the roads, causing this tractor trailer in New Jersey to slide off the highway.

Please don't put our first responders in any danger by being out if you don't have to.

And the roads aren't the only travel trouble.

With major airports impacted by the storm.

Travelers facing thousands of delays and cancellations.

Schools are closed today across the Northeast, including the nation's largest district in New York City.

The mayor delivering the news to a student.

Americans hunkering down as the storm pummels the East Coast.

Power crews also at the ready when the pace of this snow and the storm starts to slow.

Already hundreds of thousands of people without power from Virginia to Massachusetts because of the weight of the heavy wet snow and those powerful wind gusts.

Energy providers say that it could take several days to restore.

Let's bring in WNBC weather anchor Dave Price joining us from New York City with more on this historic blizzard.

Dave, we were just watching wnbc's coverage a moment ago, so we saw you driving around Long Island City in the car there.

What is it you're seeing as you're moving around the city, I understand maybe even some folks in skis trying to get around.

I don't know if you have the video clip, but we were in Brooklyn earlier today, Joe, and

you know, intrepid New Yorkers trying to make the best of it always.

We saw a gentleman who would normally pay about 100, 200 bucks for a lift ticket in, you know, Aspen Vale or Deer Valley, Utah, skiing downhill for nothing while the weather conditions went downhill as well.

And that's where we stand here in New York City.

The few who can get out and who need to get out are doing so, albeit with significant delays and certainly obstacles.

But for the rest of the folks who have the opportunity to stay inside, that's what's advisable.

If you look, we're talking about upwards of a foot and a half to two feet of snow which will fall before all is said and done.

Later on today, airports at a standstill, as we just heard from Emily Kedda as we take a look at mass transit, significant delays.

If you look at this roadway right here, 64th street, right here in Sunnyside, Queensland, there's really not a lot going on.

A sole human being, one car and everyone else just locked in until all this is done.

Like a movie you just want to see on television with a bucket of popcorn.

the ski goggles seem like a good idea with the wind blowing all over the place.

You have been covering weather here for a very long time.

Where does it rank among some of the worst storms we've seen over the last several years here in New York?

Well, if you remember, you know, just a few weeks ago, we had about a foot of snow.

But keep in mind that was a very different storm, Joe.

We didn't have these gusts to 4,555, even 80 miles per hour out on the east end of Long Island.

That in combination with Even greater snow totals and greater rates of snowfall per hour.

Now, of course, we had the record setting snowfall, I think it was back in 2016 when we got 27 inches of snow.

But once you get to about a foot and a half, two feet of snow, it's up there on the list certainly in modern history.

And for a city of millions of people, it is a rare case when, you know, five boroughs in three states in the Northeast are at least are brought to a standstill.

And that's pretty much where we are this morning.

And by the way, Joe, this isn't an on off switch where all of a sudden you're going to wind up having, you know, airports just turn on and return to normal.

From days to return to a sense of normalcy.

You can see right here just to the left of me, this is what we call one of the New York City.

This gentleman seems to be having problems here.

Yeah, that's what we call a significant disadvantage, Joe, when you're trying to drive in a foot and a half of snow with two tires on your right side knocked out.

Yeah, it's hard enough to drive flat tires in normal weather.

So I feel like trying to brave this without tires is a challenge.

We will certainly be more than glad to report from the Tri State area and give you a, a continued look at what's going on.

But a very quiet morning in a city that normally never sleeps.

I don't even think chains would even help those tires right there.

First, NBC News correspondent Valerie Castro joins us from Long Branch, New Jersey with the latest.

Valerie, it looks like hurricane coverage along the water, but with snow.

What are you seeing there along the Jersey Shore as that state faces its first blizzard warning since, I believe, 1996?

The Monmouth county sheriff told us yesterday that if this storm is anything like the one they saw in 96, then they have quite the day ahead of them.

These gusts have been getting stronger throughout the morning.

I just want to show you, because of the wind, it's been hard to get a sense of how much snow has fallen here in Long Branch.

Here on the boardwalk, it's really not more than like an inch, but

But as I walk over here towards the fencing, the snow continues to get deeper and deeper and deeper.

Our producer Jacob earlier put a yardstick out here and he was measuring 14 inches in some of these snow drifts.
