It's been just over 10 years since Bethesda Game Studios let the masses explore the Commonwealth in Fallout 4.

Advanced passive voice

As with other major Bethesda releases, it's been given a plethora of post launch support through much needed bug patches, major DLC releases, and

controversial paid microtransactions through the Creation Club.

Fallout 4 has been given a bit of a resurgence this past year with the release of the Anniversary Edition and the second season of the popular TV show.

For players who may have only experienced the Wasteland near launch, but

want to dip their toes back into the irradiated water, you might need a bit of a refresher of just what exactly has been done to it.

Worry not, this video will cover every major addition the game has had since launch.

Released in March 2026, Automatron was the first major DLC added after launch.

It added a questline where you fight off a horde of evil robots controlled by the mysterious mechanist, a character with a minor role from Fallout 3.

The questline is relatively short, lasting a few hours at the most, but

the real draw of the DLC is actually the Robot Workbench, which let players build and customize their own robot companions using various parts that you obtain from defeating other robots.

It's a relatively in depth system that allows for a lot of creativity.

Were you a fan of the settlement customization mechanic in the base game?

I know I was, even if it was more than a bit janky.

The Wasteland Workshop DLC, introduced in April 2016, expanded the mechanic with a multitude of new settlement objects and decorations.

Some new objects could be quite useful, like the decontamination arch, which removes all radiation from a player when they pass through it, saving you some precious radaway.

For those wanting to unleash their inner jigsaw, the Wasteland Workshop DLC adds various traps that the player can set up all over a settlement.

You can also capture and tame monsters and use them to defend your settlement, or use them to create your own battle arena.

Far harbor is often cited as the best Fallout 4 DLC, and

it's in the running for one of the best Fallout DLCs in general.

Released in May 2016, this DLC had players travel to the fog covered island of Far harbor to take on a missing persons case that ends with you having to deal with multiple morally ambiguous factions.

The quest writing is very strong here, so much so that I personally find it to be stronger than the main quest in the base game with multiple endings, none of them being black and white.

Players will have to question what is right and wrong and if the ends justify the means.

Far harbor is the first of two DLCs that added a new landmass to explore, and

it's a large one that players can sink a lot of time into.

There are plenty of side quests to find too, with a personal favorite of mine being a robot Locked room murder mystery inside Vault 118 if you are going to play any Fallout 4 DLC, make it Far Harbor.

Next up, released in June 2016 is the Contraptions Workshop.

This was a relatively small DLC that once again added more to the settlement customization mechanic in the base game.

It's quite impressive what you can pull off with all the new additions and with your own creativity being the real limit.

If you want, you can even create your own Rube Goldberg like track.

Also, players can finally craft their own ammo which can be a godsend on survival mode.

We all know how iconic the vaults in Fallout are both visually and thematically.

Have you ever wanted to be an Overseer in your very own vault?

Well, the Vault TEC Workshop DLC lets you do so once you discover Vault 88.

Released in July 2016, this DLC gave players the means to customize the vault how they see fit with a variety of new items to fit the famous vault aesthetic.

There's a bit more story here than the other workshop DLCs, but it is still sparse.

Players instead can craft their own story as they roleplay as an Overseer managing their party of vault dwellers.

Hopefully you will be nicer to your crew than the other vaults were.

While Far harbor explored the darker faction role playing side of the Fallout universe, Nuka World focuses a bit more on the goofy side of fallout.

Released in August 2016, players could explore an abandoned Nuka Cola themed amusement park that is currently overrun with raiders.

While not as large as Far harbor, there are still plenty of themed zones for the player to cause chaos in.

The player will have the chance to control three major raider gangs within Nuka World as the Overboss, and

after conquering each zone, the player can decide which game will rule each zone.

Keeping with the theme of Nuka World, players can now mix new Nuka Cola flavors with various effects, making it much more beneficial to loot whatever soda you can find.

New powerful enemies are scattered throughout Nuka World, making it one of the most challenging pieces of content in Fallout 4 and a fun way to close out the season Pass.

Back in 2017, Bethesda announced the Creation Club that essentially acted as a store for microtransactions that players can opt to purchase.

Some of this content was created by Bethesda internally and some of it was created by the community.

Bethesda wanted a way for console players to enjoy the mod experience that PC players have loved with each of their titles, while also compensating those who made the mods.

This was controversial to say the least, since Bethesda already had a history of paid mods on Steam, a decision that was not well received by the community.

Also, people found the pricing of the small items to be egregious.

Though the content in the Creation Club was curated by Bethesda, there were still bugs, lore, inconsistencies and balance issues that angered some fans.

Last November, over 150 pieces of creation Club content was bundled with the release of Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition.

This content is now simply called Creations and and the vast majority of the items were cosmetics such as Pip Boy skins, armor skins, weapon skins and new dog breeds.

There are a few side quests added, such as the New Vegas inspired Tale of the Beast Hunter and the Fallout 3 inspired pint sized Slasher, but

side quest content is sparse compared to the plethora of skins.

But hey, at least they added Brahmin armor, right?

Unfortunately, PC players have reported that the mandatory update that came along with the Anniversary Edition broke mod for players who didn't even upgrade.

If that wasn't enough, the update also created new bugs that caused crashes and performance issues.

There have been a multitude of patches since the release of the Anniversary Edition, but

keep in mind that you may have trouble with your mod list if you're returning to Fallout 4 after some time away and have automatic updates turned on.

Survival Mode was a free update that added an immersive difficulty option in March of 2016.

It is similar to the hardcore mode from Fallout New Vegas, but

with even more restrictions placed on the player to up the ante.

The difficulty disables the ability to fast travel, makes it so you can only save your game at beds, and

introduces survival mechanics like hunger and thirst.

If that wasn't enough, the player character had reduced carry weight, Ammo itself now has weight and combat difficulty has intensified.

For those wanting to return to the game, the but want something a bit more challenging this time around, consider giving it a go.

2017 also introduced players to the full virtual reality port of Fallout 4, similar to Bethesda's efforts with Skyrim VR.

Unlike Skyrim VR, however, it is unfortunately a PC exclusive with no signs of it being ported to PSVR 2.

Fallout 4 VR allowed players to aim guns physically and use the pit bull in a similar way to how the player character would use it.

This is a separate application to base Fallout 4, meaning if you want to explore the game in this way, you will need to repurchase this specific version.

Also, the VR version doesn't come with any of the previously mentioned DLC.

If you do own the DLC for the non VR version of Fallout 4, there are some workarounds to make it playable, but

Fast forward to 2024 a next gen update was added to the game, officially giving the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles native ports.

It featured a way to target your frame rate at either 60 or 30 frames per second, an option to prioritize performance or visuals, and

It also gives PC players official Ultra wide resolution support.

Steam Deck lovers will be happy to know that this update officially made Fallout 4 Steam Deck verified.

So if you've always craved playing Fallout on the go, this is a very solid method to do so.

Along with that, this update made nine creations free for all users, most being new weapons and power armor.

The most notable addition was an enclave focused quest named Echoes of the Past.

Keep in mind these nine creations are separate from the paid creations players unlock with the Anniversary Edition if they decide to upgrade.

So that is everything Major added to Fallout 4 over the years it's been a bumpy road at times, but

there is no doubt that Fallout 4 is a better game with the major DLC content added to it.

On February 24th, Nintendo fans will finally be treated to a Switch 2 port of Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition.

As Skyrim was one of the most popular third party Switch releases, this is a welcome addition to the Switch 2's library.
