Let's learn some syllable stress shifts today with the word iron.

So an iron is a strong metal or a tool for getting wrinkles out of your clothes.

Irony is a situation where the outcome is surprising or the opposite.

And ironic, which is when something is the opposite of what you expect.

So I have a short video on this and I actually pronounce this word regionally as arn.

Most people in the US Will say iron or iron with an extra Y in there.

So typically this is a two syllable word.

So some regions of the US Will make it a one syllable word like we do in Pittsburgh, where I grew up.

So for the first word, we are going to stress syllable number one, iron.

We are going to continue this pattern with irony.

But because we have this ick ending, anytime we see that ick ending, we're we are going to shift the stress right before the ick.

And so in this case we are going to say ironic.

And now or a some people will laugh at me and say it is ironic.

And there is some irony in the fact that I have an accent and can't pronounce iron the way most of the country does.

I know people are going to notice the difference.
