So in the first interview we're going to watch today from Hot Ones, Sean Evans asks Lisa, as a global superstar what she thinks about different media in different countries.

And she shares the challenges of giving interviews in different languages.

I think for me the big difference is language because English is not my first language, so it's challenging for me to answer or doing interview in English.

But you know, what's amazing about you is, you know, you speak English, you speak Thai, you speak Korean, you're conversational in Japanese.

Do you have any foundational advice for someone who's trying to pick up a new language?

You just have to keep talking to people in that language.

I think I feel like I'm more, I feel more confident in English poor than two years ago.

So, yeah, imagine you're two years from now.

But you know what's amazing about you is, you know, you speak English, you speak Thai, you speak Korean, you're conversational in Japanese.

Alright, so when Sean says Lisa is conversational in Japanese, he just means that she can have basic conversations in Japanese, but

It's that comfortable middle level where you can chat about everyday topics without being perfectly fluent.

A lengthy hospital stay is the perfect environment to focus your mind and attack weaknesses in your character.

If it hadn't been for this, I never would have learned conversational French.

Now, this means to say something quickly and easily, usually a list or information you know.

When you rattle off something, it flows out of your mouth without much effort.

For example, I've met some people who can rattle off the names of all the 50 United States in alphabetical order.

This phrasal verb Sean used to pick up means in this context, to teach something, to forget something, to learn a new skill.

More specifically, this suggests learning in a natural, informal way rather than through formal study.

But you can also pick up guitar or pick up cooking.

Look, the gorillas have picked up some new habits from your father.

Yeah, but Homer picked up some cool gorilla moose, too.

Do you always read people's phone messages, Ms. Lang?

Well, it's sort of a bad habit I picked up being a reporter.

What's a new skill that you've picked up?

I could be, like, you know, like a local.

So when Lisa says like a local, she's using local as a noun to mean a person who lives in that area and knows it well.

It's the opposite of being a tourist or outsider.

Locals know all the best spots, the culture, and how things really work.

That's how we cut, reduce, and link our words together in fluent speaking, right?

As usually happens with pronouns, you gets reduced here to just y.

So instead of you know and you never know, Lisa says it just like a native, you know and you never know.

Speaking of connected speech in her song Rockstar, we can find tons of instances of it.

Besides saying a smooth wanna do instead of want to do, Lisa perfectly captures another native speech pattern.

So in fluent English, when we have a T plus a Y sound, they usually morph into a ch sound.
