President Donald Trump says he's told the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu that he wants to reach a deal with Iran on its nuclear program.

Posting on social media after meeting Netanyahu at the White House, Trump said he had insisted negotiations would continue.

He added, nothing definitive has been reached, but he hoped Iran would be reasonable and responsible this time.

The two leaders also discussed developments in Gaza and the wider region.

Netanyahu has been pushing for the talks between Washington and Tehran to be expanded to include issues he feels are important.

So let's just take a closer look at what's at stake in these talks.

The United States wants Iran to permanently stop its uranium enrichment, to hand over roughly 400 kilograms of uranium already enriched to 60%, to limit its ballistic missile program, and

to stop funding and supporting armed groups in the region.

According to Washington, Iran's position, well, it's somewhat narrower.

Tehran says it'll only talk about its nuclear program and sanctions, nothing else.

Regional alliances are also off the table.

Hamid, can the gulf between the two sides be narrowed?

Yes, if they think wisely, it could be possible to reach a deal and to narrow the differences between the two sides.

The reality is that the way the Americans are looking and approaching their negotiations, a one way route, and

they have tried it in different areas in different aspects.

We had the war, we had the recent riots, which were actually led by the Americans and Israelis, and

none of them worked for them to achieve the goal that they had, the regime change that they have always mentioned as the objective.

So it is time for them to look at the situation from a different angle.

Something that happened in 2009 by President Obama before the election of Iran, after which, you remember, we had some unrest before that.

President President Obama sent a letter to the Supreme Leader and said that he is ready to respect Iran's rights.

He is ready to recognize Iran's right to enrichment and all the things.

unlike what President Trump has done last year and saying that he's ready to work with Iran.

If President Trump is wise enough to stand at that position and look at the situation, the relation to that position, that will be the worst way for himself.

First to make an achievement and leave a legacy which even President Obama could not make it, and

But if he wants to move towards oppression, towards shared sanctions and discussing things like missile program or zero enrichment.

That would be something that leads to a dead end and there would be no outcome.

And that would lead to an option which not easy, which is not possible for neither the Israelis nor the Americans.

But we both know that it is not possible and the costs are so high that they would not be actually be ready to bear the cost of that.

I mean, the other thing is it's just the very format of the way these two talked and how they're negotiating.

Surely it's better to meet face to face rather than have separate rooms in an intermediary going between them.

You know, practically speaking, the tension between the two sides are very high and the situation is very fragile.

So if they want to discuss it directly face to face and they don't have time to think, they do.

They don't have time to consider the options from the other side and they don't have time to work on the wording.

So they need time and it would be the best option to have a fragile discussion with another party.

So the intermediary can help to translate and make the interpretation between the two sides.

And of course the two sides have enough time to work on every single details of the talks and every wording that is needed.

So and they can of course check with their capitals.

So it would be better to have this for the current time and maybe if it goes on with a fruitful and constructive approach, maybe in the future it could be directly.

But for the time being it is not necessary to have directly would be actually not constructing.

It would be disruptive to have so fast and face to face negotiation.

So it is helping to me that it is indirectly through a mediator.

You know, with all this in mind, we've got the process of negotiations of the nuclear program in is a straightforward either a delay or a freeze in enrichment.

We've got them talking about the Tehran talking about perhaps enrichment going down to just about what, 10, 20% or thereabouts.

Is that a workable kind of target to work from?

Iran, you know, have been clear about its position.

Iran needs to have nuclear power and for nuclear power it needs enrichment.

Because in the past they tried the, the charter and the protocol, got the ie and they actually violated that.

They did not sell us the fuel, they did not give us the rich uranium and the things necessary for the facilities.

So Iran needs to have enrichment and needs to have power.

So more than that is something that Iran is ready to give up in return for some removal of sanctions.

So the 20% is something that is acceptable for Iran.

Of course it would ease the work of the nuclear plants.

So Iran is ready to have even 367 is a level that could be useful.

20% would be useful for Tehran facility which is a medical infrastructure.

If they provide the fuel needed for Tehran facility even 20% could be negotiated my understanding.

But zero enrichment or anything below 3.67 is something that is not practical at all.

And Iran is not going to accept that because Iran needs that nuclear power and cannot give it off.

And the other side, it wants to ask this zero enrichment that is excessive demands a short term freeze of enrichment might be possible because we are actually at that position right now after the assessment Iran is done enriching because it doesn't have access to the facilities.
