But what it actually is and what it's capable of are existential in origin, and

how it actually goes a lot deeper than you might have thought.

Before we talk about the monster itself, let me fill you in on what exactly Iron Lung is and why it's conceptually so terrifying and unique.

Decades ago, every known star inhabitable planet in the universe vanished without warning, taking everyone on them with it.

What remained was a hollow cosmos of drifting asteroids and dead moons, with the only surviving humans being those who happened to be off world at the time.

Since then, civilization has been slowly rotting away, held together by failing stations, empty ships, and

the hope that something, somewhere, was missed.

That hope leads to a barren moon hiding something unnatural.

A vast ocean of blood, human blood, deep beneath its surface.

Scans detect massive anomalies buried in a trench no one fully understands.

And whatever created them is still down there.

With no other options, you're sent to investigate in a rusted submarine assembled from scrap and desperation, known as SM13.

You must blindly navigate an ocean of blood to take photographs of key locations and hope whatever lives down below doesn't Find you.

There's only a single porthole on the sub and it needs to be closed due to depth pressure.

So you have to navigate purely via an incomplete map, proximity sensors, sound, and

a primitive external camera, which can be used to take the pictures you need to complete your mission or to get a grainy, low resolution visual of what's happening outside.

At the end of the game, you encounter this, a horrific fish creature that lurks in the Blood Ocean that attacks your vessel as you're about to complete the mission.

This is the last thing you see in the game before you meet your end.

But in 2026, Markiplier released his film adaptation of Iron Lung, which expands the lore and gives us a new, more terrifying version of this monster.

And we get an even better understanding of the of what exactly this creature is.

The convict who now has the name Simon has been sent down there for the exact same purpose as the original game.

Well, let's take a closer look at the biology of this organism.

This being is first thought to be alien, but the reality is much more haunting.

A cosmic body where even solid matter comes from the hardening of its Blood Ocean.

And within the congealed caves lies the beast.

Beast known by fans as the frog, the eldritch fish, or simply the monster.

With a thick, serpentine body, its flesh blends seamlessly into the organic structures surrounding it.

That suggests that this is a predator that is fully integrated into the ecosystem and is possibly even responsible for it creating the vast tunnels with its own body.

The mouth is dense with dozens of uneven, tightly packed teeth, not arranged to rip and tear flesh, but

for grinding, filtering or processing massive amounts of matter, possibly getting sustenance through the vast amounts of blood surrounding it.

This is the anatomy of something designed to endure the harshest of environments.

Its eyes are small and pale, fixed forwards without emotion.

There's no expression of rage or hunger, no sign of malice.

And it's the lack of expression that makes it all the more terrifying as it hides its true intention.

And perhaps the most eerie is the fact this creature looks almost humanoid.

A warped and twisted face looking right back at you.

It's been speculated that this creature is actually a mutated human, potentially the captain of the SM8, another submarine that was sent into the Blood Ocean to find answers, just like Simon.

Her body and mind warped beyond recognition.

What stalks Simon now is a mix of human biology and Something alien, a creature reshaped by the ocean.

Her voice, the same one Simon hears in the logs, is all that remains of her humanity.

This would directly mirror events in the film where the Captain of the SM8 started to consume the blood to survive, something she was against, since the blood was in fact human.

However, once fully transformed, she became a creature that survives off, feasting on the ocean itself.

We are one in the blood, Simon, the monster states heavily, implying that the substance within the blood links them like a kind of hive mind, unifying them, essentially immortalizing those that it consumes.

And now it has one goal, to gift this knowledge to others that find themselves in this hellscape.

And it's shown that whatever drives this desire potentially comes from beyond our dimension.

On Simon's journey through the depths, he encounters a mysterious light, seemingly connected to the creature and what actually caused the Quiet Rapture.

It isn't part of her, and she doesn't control it.

The light is a presence that exists outside the universe, glimpsed through the red ocean, a projection of a being so vast it bends reality around it.

Anyone who comes near it is altered, driven insane, or transformed into something that could survive in the Blood Ocean.

The monster has seen the light, been changed by it, and now it serves its will.

It's suggested that the being within the light is what caused the Quiet Rapture, eliminating the stars and habitable worlds.

And now it offers salvation as the only solution to the horrors of this new universe.

But salvation, as demonstrated by the creature, comes at a heavy price.

When Simon encounters her again, she lures him towards the light almost compulsively.

they're guided by the pull of the light itself, a greater power unlike anything seen before.

A being that can create and destroy light at will, which some people might call a God.

It's the monster's understanding of the light that drives it, as a reward for finding the answer to the end of the universe and how they've managed to survive it by changing into this new, horrifying form.

And when Simon vows to do everything in his power to put an end to the madness, the beast becomes aggressive, doing everything it can to prevent the answer from being revealed.

The real horror isn't just her size or her teeth or her distorted face.

It's that she is no longer fully human, no longer bound by human rules and tied to a force that warps reality itself.

One look at this creature activates primal fears of large creatures of the deep ocean and the Unknown.

Very little is explained about the monster, and that's what makes it so terrifying.

It lends itself perfectly to the genre of cosmic horror.

Cosmic horror isn't about monsters that want to mindlessly eat you.

It's about forces so vast, so far beyond human understanding, that human minds can't fully comprehend it.

It changes perception, drives people insane and transforms them into something that can survive in the Blood Ocean.

The monster survived this evolution, becoming a creature that is no longer human, but

still retains traces of the mind it once had.

The fear comes from realizing that the universe doesn't revolve around humanity.

Vast, indifferent forces exist that can crush, reshape, or ignore us entirely.

Size, teeth or claws don't make it terrifying.

The horror comes from knowing that something exists beyond our understanding and that our survival, even our reality, are insignificant to it.
