And then you end up replaying in your head how awkward it was for days on end wishing that it just never happened.

If you have ever felt invisible in meetings, or you feel as though you've been passed over for promotions, or you're just simply frustrated that your voice and your communication isn't making the impact that you know it should, I want you to lean in and listen to what I have to share with you today today.

Because the truth is, it's not that you don't know how to communicate, but

it's that when you do communicate, you might be making some small invisible mistakes that you don't even realize you're doing that are costing you respect at work and they're costing you advancement opportunities, growth and promotion.

And when you consistently repeat these same mistakes, they can erode your credibility at work, they can keep you undervalued, and

they can block your path to those leadership roles that you deserve.

I have helped you, thousands of professionals over the last decade to advance in their careers and I have seen these mistakes happen over and over again.

So in this video I want to share with you what you need to stop doing when it comes to your communication at work and what you need to start doing so that you can be seen as that calm, confident leader in your organization.

Here are the three communication mistakes that you are making at work and the exact strategies on how to Fix them.

Mistake number one is hiding behind your work and only your work.

Raise your hand if you were raised to believe that you need to let your work speak for itself, that you need to show, not tell that you can't be a show off.

You have to be humble, you have to be modest.

If you're similar to me, most likely you were raised in a cultural background that was non western.

So you were raised to believe that you need to be humble, you need to lay low, you need to not speak out of line, and

you need to, as I said, let your work speak for itself.

And so what happens is we bring this identity, this belief that we have about not showing off, not talking out of line to our adult workplace lives.

And what ends up happening is we don't speak up, we don't share our opinions, we don't share our ideas, and

But here's the truth that you need to understand.

If you are not visible at work, if you're not sharing your perspective, your ideas, your insights, people simply will not know the value that you bring.

You're doing all this hard work, you're going into the forest, chopping down trees, gathering the logs and putting them in the fire pit, but

never actually building the fire, never lighting it up.

People will not be able to feel your warmth, they will not feel your impact.

You do not want to be doing this when it comes to your work.

You want to make sure that if you are doing something that you talk about it.

People do not know what you're up to unless you talk about it.

Really, people are concerned about themselves.

Everyone is worried about what's on their plate.

And if you're relying on someone else, you're looking for your manager or your manager's manager to see your value.

You need to demonstrate your value, you need to talk about your value.

And this is all about communicating your progress updates, but

also sharing your wins and achievements whenever you get the chance.

Talk about the problems that you've been able to solve recently and what results they have.

Talk about how you are currently looking at a certain project or situation, what you're thinking about it, what's your thought process, and

then share what your recommendation will be.

You need to start articulating all of these things in the workplace on a more consistent basis.

So I want to make sure that you understand that this is not about pretending to be someone else.

And this is not about just speaking once in a meeting and hoping that that's enough.

This is about building a whole new habit and a whole new way of being.

It is really an overhaul of how you are showing up at work.

If you want to be a leader one day in your career, you want to get to that senior management director, C suite level, let's say, then you need to be able to walk the path of what that person will look like one day.

You need to be able to take on those steps and be able to speak in a way that is clear, that is calm, that is confident, so that others can look to you and see you as a true leader.

So here is a simple fix that you can start implementing tomorrow.

Go in with the intention that you're going to say something.

Don't go into a meeting just to be an observer.

Don't go into a meeting just to be that wallflower, not saying anything, not speaking and passively listening to what everyone else is talking about.

Go into the meeting with an intention, the intention that you're going to share an idea, you're going to give an update, or you're going to add value in some way, shape or form to the conversation.

Have that intention and make sure that you actually execute on it.

So find the opportunity, you're going to stay more alert.

What you'll find is that when you go in with the right intention, you're going to stay alert in meeting, you're going to look for opportunities.

Your brain is automatically going to search for ways that you can add value, that you can speak to a topic.

And as an example, you might be going to a project management meeting.

You may not be fully involved in that particular project, but

you're involved in, let's say, developing a certain report.

Let's say in the meeting they talk about a certain report, that certain report that you happen to be involved in, and

they talk and share a little bit about it.

You can then in that moment ask yourself, what can I say about that that would help them in this scenario?

That would give them insight that they don't already have.

This is what happens when you go in with the right intention to speak.

Because then in that moment, your brain will come up with something for you to share and you'll be able to share it.

Contributing in meetings is just like adding logs to a fire.

Keep it going, because if you stop, the fire will eventually burn out.

Now let's talk about mistake number two, which is over explaining and drowning people in details.

This is one of the most common mistakes that quiet achievers make when it comes to trying to speak up.

You end up being overly technical, overly prepared.

You have a perfect script that you're probably reading off of.

Especially if you're on a zoom meeting, it's so easy to do this where you're just getting right into it, you're getting right into the details and what ends up happening.

The group, the people on your team in the meeting, they all end up feeling confused, maybe a little lost, or they are bored.

Because there's nothing in terms of how you're delivering your information, how you're saying what you're saying, sharing your ideas, that is exciting for them, that is engaging for them, and

So instead of earning people's respect with all the knowledge and information that you're sharing, people are losing interest, their eyes are glazing over and you've basically lost their attention.
