Reuters witnessed a convoy of Syrian government security forces moving towards the Kurdish controlled city of Hasakah in the northeast on Monday.

The deployment is part of a US backed ceasefire deal that foresees integrating Kurdish forces and Kurdish held territory with the government in Damascus.

The deal announced on Friday, aimed to stave off further conflict between President Ahmed Ashara's government and the Kurdish led Syrian Democratic Forces.

Government troops had taken swathes of eastern and northern Syria from Kurdish forces last month.

The SDF was once Washington's main ally in Syria's civil war, playing a vital part in the fight against Islamic State militants.

But its status dimmed as President Donald Trump built close ties with Shahra, a former Al Qaeda commander who has now brought almost all of Syria back under the authority of Damascus.

The accord between the factions foresees a phased integration of Kurdish fighters with government for forces.

The United States has hailed the agreement as a historic milestone toward unity and reconciliation in Syria after 14 years of civil war.
