Are you ready for some more football practice today?

I am here with the Tarle Speech miniseries on football and NFL terms leading up to the Super Bowl.

And today we are going to practice syllable stress with phrases that a referee may say.

And we're going to start with ruling on the field.

And that just means the original call that the referees make when they are on the field with the players.

So we sort of have these bookends with our syllable stress ruling on the field.

The other syllables in the middle are going to be reduced.

That means they are going to be quicker, lower in pitch and softer overall, and

Our most precise syllables and vowels will be the two at the beginning and at the end.

Okay, I'm going to say it a few times, and then you take a turn.

And this means that the referees watched a replay.

So after review, after review, again, we are going to have that bookend syllable stress.

I am actually saying der for syllable number two because I'm using that slap T because I am reducing that syllable so much.

And because we have a lot of voiced sounds after it, kind of making that T a D.

You can totally say after review with the true T, and that's fine.

But I am going to be pronouncing it with a flap T, which I like to say, think about as just a super fast D sound.

Let's practice, and then we're going to put it all together, really focus on stress and then reduction.

This means that after review, the decision does not change.

So for this phrase, I love this one because we can practice so many things.

This is a rule that we use most of the time in English in connected speech.

And we reduce the the and we pronounce it with a schwa.

So many people ask me, when do I say the versus the?

Most of the time you're going to say the.

We are going to do that in this situation.

Another rule that we typically follow in American English is that we stress the most important word in a sentence or phrase.

The most important word here is that it stands, but they are not changing it.

You are hearing a little bit of stress on call because that is more important.

Weight wise, we are giving it more importance than the call is more important here.

But our primary stress is still going to go on to stay when we add that the call stands.

The get a little more stress on call and then the most on stands.

So you might hear a little bit of like an uptick there.

Now we have the call is overturned for this.

We know how to say the call because we just practiced that with the call stands.

This stress is going to be secondary to when we have the phrase is overturned.

It's going to be reduced because it's just helping our verb overturned.

That means we have these two words together that create this verb.

And we stress syllable or word to in verbs.

Typically, that's a general American English rule that does work most of the time.

So I'm going to have low, high, low, low, high.
