... thousands of protesters took to the streets in the United States to demand the withdrawal of federal immigration agents from Minnesota.

That's after the fatal shootings in Minneapolis this month of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by immigration, or ICE, agents.

These incidents have ignited nationwide outrage and calls for further action.

Many students and teachers abandoned classes from California to New York.

250 demonstrations were organised across 46 states under the slogan, "No Work, No School, No shopping, Stop Funding ICE."

Riot police stood in a line with shields as protesters erupted outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles.

Protesters moved a shipping container to block the entrance to the facility.

Hundreds in Houston also gathered outside an ICE detention center to denounce the actions of the department.

Meanwhile, marches took place through Washington, D.C., calling for accountability.

ICE and a litany of other forces have been unleashed as racist and inhumane weapons and against our communities.

We have seen our neighbors kidnapped off the streets,

dragged out of their cars, out of their homes, out of their schools.

President Donald Trump has in turn offered a vote of confidence for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, whose department oversees ICE.

Under a national immigration crackdown, Trump has sent 3,000 federal officers to the Minneapolis area.

Trump said earlier this week he wanted to "de-escalate a bit."

But when asked by reporters on Thursday if he was pulling back, Trump said, "Not at all."
