Technology can be a game changer when it comes to finding animals.

Using radio or GPS collars to track them can be an essential scientific tool for the Zambian Carnival program.

ZCP have some hyena collars that they want to deploy.

ZCP can use the data from these collars to get in depth information about the animals here and use it to protect them.

They've collared lots of other predators, so they've got lions collared, some of the dogs are collared.

Tracking the animal's movement is vital for knowing their routines and their home ranges.

This is essential for knowing where and how to protect Zambia's wildlife.

Now they want to be able to gather more information about the hyena.

So we want to get a collar on one of the more influential individuals so one of the higher ranking females, the Kingdom team can help.

After watching the same characters over the filming of the series, they can offer, offer intel on the hyena clan.

Without a collar to give them a signal, they need to try and track them down the old fashioned way.

We've been looking for hours now, can't seem to find the other hyenas anywhere.

You need to find them soon because the rains are coming and we don't want to miss this opportunity.

But they're already seeing the first sign, signs of the weather changing.

A quick storm that has driven the hyenas into cover and out of sight.

No luck so far, let's try again tomorrow.

So we're back at the Tenatena clan den and it's just before sunrise and there's quite a few adults around and two of them get.

There'll be really good ones to color so, so we're just waiting with ZCP while they set up and get ready to deploy the collar.

It's looking like the ZCP are going to be able to do it today.

That's the call they're using to bring them in.

The shy hyenas are reluctant to get close to the vehicles.

But eventually the vet is in the right position to dart the chosen candidate with a tranquilizer.

It takes quick effect and the team leap into action.

Water and a hood keep the hyena cool and calm while the ZCP team get to work fitting a collar, taking measurements and a sample of blood.

The team have had lots of training to make sure this is done safely for themselves and the hyena.

It's really important for ZCP to collar some of these apex predators in the park because it's giving them lots of data where they go, how long they go to certain places for, what their sort of daily routine is.

It builds the bigger picture of their life cycle.

Then you know that these areas need to be particularly protected.

We managed to support ZCP in their collaring efforts and the hyena was collared, which is great days in the making.

We managed to find the individual that we think is going to yield some great data.

With each collared animal, ZCP can deepen their understanding of these vital predators.

And as a bonus, the hyenas are now a little easier for the Kingdom team to find and capture their remarkable lives on camera.
