My first guest this evening is a two time Academy Award winner and outspoken political activist.

She just relaunched the Committee for the First Amendment.

And as part of that idea, you're for folks at home who may not know about this yet.

What is the Committee for the First Amendment and why did you feel it was important to restart it?

In the late 40s and early 50s, Joseph McCarthy in the 50s and the House on American Activities Committee in the late 40s tried to destroy, they hunted down people that they suspected were anti American.

And of course they always start with the universities, the educational system and artists because we get into people's heads, we can affect how people think.

Yeah, and so they destroyed, you know, they put people in prison and destroyed careers.

And so a group in Hollywood, my father was a part of it, Henry Fonda.

This is the committee for the First Amendment in D.C. on October of 1947.

Among the people in this photo are your dad also.

Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Danny Cade, John Huston, Paula Reed.

Well, they had a radio show called Hollywood Fights Back and I think we have a, we got a recording from one of their shows.

Do you want to set this up and let us know who this is?

Yeah, well, so we found this recording because we, well, we relaunched the committee on October 1st.

You know, any government is held up by pillars of Support.

And the government or the regime is only as strong as the pillars of support.

And we want to remove the Entertainment Committee as a pillar of support.

But there's bankers, there's army, there's caregivers, there's women.

And so we said, okay, we have to organize our community so that we stand up and fight for our freedoms.

But, you know, First Amendment, it's speech.

It's freedom of assembly, of freedom of religion, freedom of the press and freedom to protest.

We have this recording, and you have a. Yeah, we have Judy Garland's voice.

It's always been your right to read or see anything you wanted to, but

now it seems to be getting kind of complicated.

For the past week in Washington, the House Committee on UN American Activities has been investigating the film industry.

Now, I have never been a member of any political organization, but I've been following this investigation, and

There are a lot of stars here to speak to you.

It's one thing if someone says we're not good actors.

It's something else again to say we're not good Americans.
