In today's English lesson we are going to watch a news clip.

Gerund

Watching the news in English is a great way to improve your English.

Unfortunately, they often use very difficult terms.

After you watch the short clip from the news, I will come back and teach all the difficult terms.

I've been an English teacher in the United states for over 20 years.

And today's English lesson is going to be about how tensions are rising between ICE and protesters.

If you don't know what ICE is, we have talked about it on the channel before, but

they are the police from the federal government in Washington D.C.

who make sure that the people who are in this country are here legally.

You may also know there was an incident a couple weeks ago between ICE and and a protester.

I have an English lesson on the channel about that.

I will leave a link to it at the end of this English lesson.

It snowed last night so I need to do a little shoveling while you watch the news clip.

And then I will go inside where I can teach English a little bit better before I start shoveling.

You are going to see a video that is pretty intense.

You will see a car that is trying to ram some police officers.

All right here with reaction ICE director Todd Lyons.

Todd, I mean if that doesn't educate the public about these ramming incidents, I don't know what else will.

On top of what happened, you know, previously, we now have three in recent days.

Now do you tie a lot of this danger to the rhetoric of people like Tim Walls who compare his eyes to Gestapo?

Okay, you have seen some of the news clip.

Some might be review if you have been watching this channel for a little bit of time and some are going to be new.

But this first one when you are watching the part of the video where that car was trapped but driving pretty crazy, ramming different cars, I think ramming is the fourth one we'll talk about.

But that car was ramming other cars trying to get away, and

the ICE agents were in quite a bit of danger.

You heard the ICE agent saying, watch out.

Getting older helps me read a little bit better.

So for each of these, I will have a picture.

I will have the official definition, and I will use it in a sentence.

So if you hear somebody say watch out in English, that means to be careful because there might be danger.

And if you look at that picture, we have a car roaring by very quickly.

It's another way to say that car is going fast.

But you might also hear them say, hey, cut it off.

They say it very quickly, which is different from cut it out.

So we'll talk about both of those right now.

That means to stop a supply of something like electricity or money, or to drive in front of a car dangerously.

So we'll talk about that second one in just a minute.

The electric company will cut off the power if you don't pay the bill.

I remember when I was in college, I forgot to pay my electric bill or my light bill, and

Now, the other part is, if you are driving and a car swerves in front of you very quickly, like you almost hit them, we would say that car cut you off.

That's another way to tell someone to stop.

A phrase used to tell someone to stop doing something annoying.

And you can see that man is holding his ears.

Okay, we talked about ramming a little earlier.

Let's talk about the official definition.

It means hitting into something with a lot of force.
