A day after the United States said it would end its involvement with dozens of United Nations agencies,

a UN Spokesperson said it regrets the decision by Washington, but the work goes on.

All United Nations entities will go on with the implementation of their mandates as given to us by member states.

The United Nations has a responsibility to deliver for all those who depend on us, and

we will continue to carry out our mandates with determination.

On Thursday, many UN officials spent the day sifting through the list of UN agencies that the US said they would withdraw from, and the list is long.

Several deal with climate, like the UN Framework for the Convention on Climate Change.

Others focus on issues related to women and children,

like the UN Office on Violence Against Children and also the Office on Sexual Violence in Conflict,

while others deal with democracy and rule of law,

like the International Law Commission, the UN Democracy Fund, and the UN Peace Building Fund.

Daniel Forti is a UN Analyst at the Crisis Group.

He told me, despite the US Decision, don't expect Washington and the UN to break from one another.

It's impossible for the US and the UN to function without each other.

I mean, and that relationship works both ways.

The UN has to learn how to function and how to prioritize at a moment when Washington is reducing its political and financial commitment to the world organization.

Adding to the gloomy mood at UN headquarters,

the US is the largest funder to the annual UN budget, about 22%.

It has yet to pay its mandatory annual dues for last year or this year,

It's unclear when or even if the US will pay.
