I'm here with the wonderful Jodie Foster.

His new movie, A Private Life, is in theaters January 16th.

I forgot about that big hat 50 years ago.

It's 50 years since the release of Taxi Driver.

They didn't want me to go to Cannes, so they didn't pay for me to go.

Yeah, because I spoke French and, you know, I thought.

We both thought, like, oh, well, that'll be a great opportunity because you speak French and While.

But while I was there, Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese had, like, a moment of great paranoia because they weren't sure the movie was gonna be well received.

they didn't know whether to get an X rating or whether anyone would like it.

So once they'd done the press conference and the red steps, they never came out of their hotel rooms.

They didn't come out of their hotel room.

What do you think the director's intention was of him?

And, you know, months and months of him driving taxis and, you know, moaning around New York City.

But he kept picking me up and taking me to lunch and then running lines with me.

And by the third time he did that, I was very bored.

he didn't say very much, so he would just run these lines with me.

And then he took the time on the third day to really start and make me understand what improvisation was.

I think the only reason that I'm an actor now is that Robert De Niro made me understand that it was deeper than what I had already been doing.

What did actually the improvisation sort of light bulb go off for you?

I think I thought when I was a kid, you know, when we talked about, like, oh, this could be your career, I thought, wait, I gotta learn lines and then say them.

I didn't understand that there was more to the process.

And once I realized that through Robert Dairo, because I was such a huge film fan, I thought, oh, this is what I want to do.
