Turns out, I've been using hand warmers wrong my entire life.

What I thought you're supposed to do with these, and

maybe you guys are making this mistake too,

or just dropping it straight into your mitt and having it rest right against your fingers because it feels nice and warm.

There's actually a way better way that keeps your fingers warmer for longer.

When you put one on the back of your hand, it feels nice and warm, but

that's mainly because it's warming your skin.

It's confusing because you see a diagram like this with all the blood vessels on the back of your hand

and it doesn't interfere with grabbing things.

To add to the confusion, some glove companies even have a little zipper pouch here and that's made for a hand warmer to go in,

making you think that that's the best placement for one.

But it's surprisingly not that effective for the long term

because you're mostly heating skin, bones, tendons and veins.

Instead, we want to heat the arteries themselves, which bring blood from your core to your fingertips.

So the better and more effective way to use a hand warmer is by putting it on your wrist.

It's a strange concept because if you put a hand warmer in and then stick your hand in, it feels really nice.

But the thing to remember is that's only surface-level heat,

which will fade pretty quickly and leave your fingers cold again.

How do we easily attach a hand warmer to our wrist?

The easiest way is if you have long gauntlet-style gloves with a simple cinching feature.

This keeps the hand warmer in place perfectly on your wrist.

If you don't have that, a base layer with a thumb hole is a great way of holding it in place too.

Or if you wear a watch, you could loosen it up, slide the heating pad underneath, then tighten [it] again.

It's a quick, easy add on for something you or your significant other might already carry.

Just make sure it's not too tight and doesn't cut off any circulation because that'll have the opposite effect.

The same thing goes if you use an elastic band.

And lastly, a neck buff works really well for this.

Whether you have a heating pad under there or not, even without one, it'll improve some heat to those fingers.

And a bonus tip, hand warmers work by reacting with oxygen to produce that heat.

So if you want to save one for later or extend its life.

All you have to do is put it in a Ziploc bag, seal it up, and

make sure there's no more air inside and you can save it to use later.

You could try this one out as a test yourself.

Next time you're out in the cold, put one hand warmer on one wrist and another on the back of your other hand.

If you're out there for a while, you'll be able to feel a legitimate difference between the two hands.
