Strategic Planning from day one let's first dispel a myth.

Some majors are more popular, but what's best is what's the best fit for you.

58% of pre meds choose biological sciences because the courses have the most overlap with their med school prerequisite, which include biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, English and math.

Some schools also require courses in biochemistry, genetics, behavioral science, such as psychology or sociology or computer science.

But here's what most students don't realize.

Pursuing your authentic interests can actually give you a strategic advantage.

If you're passionate about the humanities, that enthusiasm will show in your grades and interviews.

And that passion is what ADCOMs want to see.

They review hundreds of applications every single day.

So if you have an English or fine arts degree, it's more likely to catch their attention.

Applying to medical school is incredibly competitive.

Even at the top, you're up against thousands of applicants with similar stats to you.

When ADCOMs sift through thousands of near identical candidates, they're looking for anything that stands out.

A compelling story will always win out over stats alone.

But first, your story begins with your pre med major.

Last year, only 44% of biological science majors were accepted, compared to 53% of humanities majors and 54% of math and statistics majors.

There's also real value in pursuing something more difficult.

Challenging majors build the work ethic and study habits you'll absolutely need in medical school.

When I chose neuroscience at ucla, it was considered one of the toughest pre med majors alongside biomedical engineering.

But that rigor forced me to develop stronger study strategies early.

And when the neurology block came around in med school, I was already well prepared.

Don't force a unique major just to stand out if your passion isn't there, but

if you have genuine interests beyond biological sciences.

And don't think you can game the system by picking an easy major to boost your GPA.

ADCOMs have all of your information, and they consider more than just basic numbers.

If two candidates have similar stats, ADCOMs will look at other factors like their major, how advanced their classes were, and

A4.0, bioengineering major hailing from Harvard is a completely different story than a 4o art history major at a state school.

Regardless of which major you pick, use your first two years to focus on your medical school prerequisites.

Your freshman year sets the stage for everything that follows.

This is when you'll establish your academic foundation and begin exploring the activities that will define your application.

Here's how to approach your first year strategically.

First, your GPA sets the baseline for your competitiveness in everything that follows.

During your first quarter or semester, don't commit too heavily to challenging coursework.

There will be an adjustment period with social distractions and newfound freedom.

But you don't want your grades to suffer, which is precisely what happened to a friend of mine, and

They didn't balance socializing with their studies, and

by the end of the first quarter they had a 2.0 GPA.

Now they turned things around after that, but

despite their hard work, by the end of their junior year, three years later, their GPA had only risen to 3.4.

It's a massive challenge to claw your way back from a bad start.

Next, start exploring extracurriculars early on.

The three most important ones for med school are clinical experience, volunteering, and leadership.

We recommend starting with the fundamentals and covering the basics.

Then, with your extra time, dive deeper into the things you're genuinely interested in, whether they're medicine related or not.

For example, I was on the UCLA student stroke team.

I wanted to get more involved because I found neuroscience, strokes and the brain fascinating.

As a neuroscience major, I went beyond just gaining clinical exposure by taking on research and leadership roles within the project, which shows medical school admissions committees I take initiative, can lead, and

All traits they want to see any future doctor.

But you can also pursue things completely outside of medicine.

In fact, pursuing activities you're passionate about beyond medicine shows your depth and gives ADCOM something intriguing to speak to you about.

During interview season, I was on a co ed dance team that competed across the US and Canada at every medical school.

Interviewers absolutely loved talking about it because it was such a unique experience.

It showed leadership, discipline, longitudinal commitment and growth throughout the process.

Plus, they're only human when you put yourself in their shoes.

It's only natural that they'd be excited to talk about something other than yet another cookie cutter extracurricular like shadowing or hospital volunteering.

But understand your own availability and don't over commit.

It's better to under commit and overperform than to spread yourself so thin that you lose sight of other key areas like your grades.

After reviewing thousands of applications, we've identified a pattern in rejected students.

They either start too late or lack longitudinal commitment because they're not fully engaging in any activity, they're trying to get the longest list rather than showing depth and commitment.
