We're on the lookout for sales and marketing representatives to join our team.

You'll be the face of our customers selling our vendors.

Have you ever seen one of these positions on a job board?

Typically displayed as a marketing coordinator or a brand ambassador.

These jobs come with descriptions so vague that you could do it.

You follow through with multiple rounds of interviews only to be met with a position that you were not expecting at all.

This is the story of how I accidentally recruited for a devilcore company.

I came across a job on indeed for a recruiter position.

I was very quickly contacted by this company who wanted to bring me in for a phone interview and then an in person interview.

I go in for the in person interview and I felt like I walked into a frat house.

On the walls were just quotes from Kobe Bryant, lots and lots of Wolf of Wall street quotes.

No chairs, no tables, just motivational quotes plastering the walls and about 50 people.

Apparently every morning they had a team building meeting and they just kind of got each other like hyped up for the day.

I would call the phone number on the resume and read a three minute script and then I would offer them an interview if they seemed like a good fit.

We were only required to book five people a day, but

five to 10 is where you wanted to hit at, which is important.

I was then contacted later that day to start my position the following Monday.

We had to stick to a very strict script which I so lovingly have kept with me.

So person watching this video right now at we are looking for someone to join our sales and marketing team.

So it's not like we're looking for someone with a ton of experience in this particular field.

What we are looking for is someone with great people skills who would be interested in growing with our company.

Did that tell you anything about the job at all?

And that was the point when I discovered what the company actually was.

My coworker and I were asked to sit in on one of these two, two hour long CEO group interviews.

We'd walk into the boardroom with our CEO in an expensive suit and a guy following him with a camera on a gimbal to make him look important.

The CEO was a young man who constantly flaunted his new money.

He had a nice office with a bunch of designer shoes in it.

What I was told for this position is that the position included some benefits and also a base pay as well as commission.

And that's what I've been telling people for two weeks.

However, what I learned in that meeting was that you only get a base pay for two weeks and they make sure not to tell you that until you're in the doors and then you are purely commission.

And if you don't sell over $5,000 worth of commission in two weeks consecutively, you were let go.

He explained the business a little bit further.

They were a marketing company technically, but they were door to door salesmen selling home improvement.

At the end of the interview, they would hand everyone a worksheet, basically where they make you write down your biggest goals in life.

They always said the amount of money you make never caps off so you can achieve these big financial goals, when in reality you can't.

Through being on this team, I learned the desperate and insidious sales tactics that the sales team used.

Essentially, they would come to your home dressed in polos that didn't have our company's name, but

a vague sounding name that almost sounded like the government.

Think of a name like the California Water Commission.

And because this person is at your door in a polo that looks government, a lot of times they would let these people in, they would tell you that they needed to perform a water test, which always had the same outcome.

You had contaminated water and they needed to install something to fix it.

But then once you sold that water system, you might as well get new pipes.

But if you're redoing the pipe, you might as well get new H Vac.

And if you're redoing the H Vac, you might as well redo the insulation as well.

And insulation is no good without a new roof.

A $20,000 sale quickly became over $100,000 worth of equipment they were selling to these people.

I had direct access to all of the wonderful client feedback from people they successfully sold to.

Countless stories of elderly people, low income people who were locked into a 50 year plan with this company who could not get out of it.

The children of these elderly parents calling our company, demanding refunds, lawyering up because they sold to someone who wasn't completely lucid, had dementia, and

There were also hundreds of photos of unhappy clients who had massive holes in their walls, ceilings, floors from where the construction began and abruptly stopped because they didn't have the permits yet.

They would half install it and then go get the permit as a way to lock you into the sale.

The manipulation didn't end with the clients.

There was one salesman who I became pretty close with because I'm the one who actually got him hired.

I remember he quit a week after he was hired and I saw him just out in the street one day and I was like, oh my God, like, do you remember me?

I'm so sorry that, like, it didn't work out at the company.

He told me a story about his breaking point, which is when the higher ups forced him to do the sales pitch to a woman with cancer.

And he said that he couldn't morally handle that anymore.

I think that day was kind of a breaking point.

Every day I wasn't doing something that made the world better.

I was doing something that harmed the world.

Actively kept people out of jobs, putting them in jobs that they won't last in.

And it was a job that I just felt stuck in.

I applied for so many other jobs during this time and nothing was sticking.

As the months went on, our requirements as recruiters became more and more strenuous.

What was once five or ten people booked a day quickly became 1520.

So this is where we introduce my villain of the story, the mentor.

The mentor was an outside hire, so she gave advice to all kinds of devilcore businesses.

When she really stepped foot in the MY team, she scheduled this meeting with me.

Not about anything, about the business, about my personal life.

She asked me what my personal goals were, what I wanted to do for a living.
