Industry insiders say the benefits of artificial intelligence to the film industry could be limitless.

Despite the opportunities, professionals have previously taken industrial action over the use of AI with fears that the technology could pose a risk to jobs.

Our artificial intelligence correspondent Mark Chislak reports AI is evolving fast.

Some industries worry that it could affect jobs.

Some AI tools promise that with just a few typed prompts, the work of an entire film crew can be created by a single person with a laptop.

But does this new creative freedom pose a serious threat to jobs?

To find out, I asked Benjamin Barfoot, director of last year's acclaimed psychological horror movie Daddy's Head, to put the latest AI tech.

AI like this offers a world of potential for movie makers.

I mean, the first thing I tried to do with this software was just, you know, do something large scale that would cost a lot of money.

But it was making all sorts of strange mistakes.

For one, it just constantly wanted to make Mark White.

Originally, I was trying to make a dragon in the background, but that failed miserably.

So I decided to go for a volcano, which it managed to do, but

in the end, just to get 10 working shots, I had to do 150 shots.

And the reason for that is because there are no controls or tools beyond prompting.

There's just so much interpretation with prompting.

Ben working with AI to try and make films, what for you was the biggest challenge?

They're trying to make it accessible to a consumer level.

Like, anyone can do this, but there's no control or reasoning that you can look at.

What it's doing at the moment is it gets rid of you and makes you again, but

You've asked to do it, but who you're coming out as.

And then it's like, was that his performance?

You know what actors, big Hollywood actors, you'd be like, we're going to make a movie like this, by the way.

But every single performance that you've done is going to sort of be destroyed and then remade, which is nuts when you think about it.

But one of the interesting things you said while making the film with me, it tried to change my ethnicity all the time.

The model's attempts at continually changing my ethnicity highlight the issue of bias in the way AI is trained.

You rely on your crew trying out different lights, different costumes.

All the details are tweaking, tweaking, tweaking, tweaking, tweaking the image.

You have no level of control when you're doing anything like that with AI at all.

There's no one to really explain the rules as to what you're doing as a director.

Whereas with human beings and crews, they will describe to you why they've chosen it, why it works, and

I see in the future that technology slowly integrated into a hybrid model of where we are with traditional filmmaking as well.

But we're just going to be wanting to work with a brilliant script, brilliant actors and brilliantly directed.

Team AI and film a work in progress, then.

Human creativity and skill remain the gold standard for now.
