During the mayoral election campaign, both men traded a lot of insults.

Mandani of being a communist and said that New York would be ruined under him.

Mr. Mamdani accused Mr. Trump of being an authoritarian figure.

When all of that was put to both men inside the White House behind me, a very different tune.

Yes, they're ideologically different, but they're both New Yorkers.

They have a loyal following, a huge, powerful social media presence, and

they campaigned on the same issue, which is why voters were attracted to them.

The cost of living, making life more affordable for people.

And that is what they focused on inside that meeting in the White House.

That's not to say the honeymoon will last forever.

Trump has threatened to cut federal funding for New York, but

it's something he can't do unilaterally as the president.

He's also threatened to send in National Guard troops to tackle crime.

Certainly, the men didn't talk about them in the White House.

But Mr. Trump has a real love for New York, even telling Mr.

Mamdani that he would like to do his job.
