Despite being political opposites, US President Donald Trump had warm words for New York's mayor elect, Zoram Mamdani on Friday.

We agree on a lot more than I would have thought.

I want him to do a great job, and we'll help them do a great job.

Mamdani, a Democratic socialist who won New York's mayoral race earlier this month, had requested the meeting after weeks of the two trading insults in the media.

Trump had also threatened to strip federal funding from New York City if Mamdani was elected.

But after speaking behind closed doors, the two appeared friendly.

I appreciated the meeting with the president, and

as he said, it was a productive meeting focused on a place of shared admiration and love, which is New York City.

Trump playfully brushed off a question to Mamdani over whether the mayor, left, thought he was a fascist.

The pair also pledged to collaborate on tackling crime and affordability.

Ramdani has vowed to focus on cost of living issues, including housing prices.

New Yorkers pay nearly double the average rent nationwide.

We spoke about rent, we spoke about groceries, we spoke about utilities, we spoke about the different ways in which people are being pushed out.

And I appreciated the time with the president.

I look forward to working together to deliver that affordability for New Yorkers.

Trump has recently polled badly over inflation, a major issue for Americans.

A Reuters Ipsos poll this week found only 26% of Americans think Trump is doing a good job at managing the cost of living.

Mandani is set to be sworn as New York's mayor on January 1st.
