Laundry can feel like a never-ending task.

Adverbs of degree

Just when you think it's done, there's always more.

But as a professional cleaner and someone who has a family who makes, well, a lot of laundry,

I've learned some tips and tricks to help make laundry faster, easier, and less overwhelming.

Now the first tip is to keep a laundry hamper in every bedroom of your home.

Now I know this might kind of seem simple,

but we really noticed once we started doing this, not only was our bedroom more clean and tidy,

but we always had a place to go with our laundry.

So that way when it was time to do a load, we didn't have to go searching for it.

Now, a huge bonus of this simple tip is that it's really helped our daughter build some great cleaning habits.

The next tip is to always separate your clothes.

Now I know what you might be thinking, "Brandon, that is a huge waste of time."

But in my experience, it's super important because you're usually only just one red sock away from ruining your favorite shirt.

Now there are a lot of different ways you can sort your clothes and sometimes it can get a little over complicated.

And so for us, we try to keep it as simple as possible.

We just separate them in darks, colors and whites.

Now if you have gym clothes that are kind of stinky and damp, I don't love to throw them in the hamper with all the other clothes.

So my solution is just to throw them here in a mesh bag.

Now I will say getting that stink out can be a bit of a challenge.

So definitely stick around because I have a solution for that.

Now another tip to keep in mind while you're sorting your clothes,

and this is actually something my mother taught me many years ago.

Shout out to mom. Drop "Hi mom" in the chat. I know she's watching.

But is to always turn your graphic tees or like band tees and things inside out.

This helps prevent things like pilling, fading, and even the graphic from cracking.

Now sometimes you'll have a piece of clothing and you're just not quite sure how to wash it.

Now when you come and look at the tag, you'll notice all the laundry symbols here.

Now this is a ton of valuable information, but sometimes when you look at this, it just looks like another language.

So a quick iPhone hack for this is to grab your iPhone,

and then we're going to come in and we're actually going to take a picture here of the laundry symbols on the tag and then go to that image that you just took.

We're going to click the eye icon here, give it a second to load,

and before you know it, any second now it's going to show up.

There it is, the laundry care instructions.

And this tells you everything you need to know and exactly how to wash the piece.

Now, if you ever get a stain like this shirt has here, it's very important to pre treat that spot as soon as possible.

The faster you get to it, the more likely it will come out.

But unfortunately, if you let it sit there for a while, it's going to be that much harder to remove later.

Now this shirt has a chilly spot and sometimes that can be a little greasy and challenging to remove.

So I like to first start by just rinsing it with some cold water to kind of get the first layer of grime off of the area.

Then I come through with a spotter spray.

Now I really like to use the Tide Rescue.

But if you don't have that, you can just use Dawn Powerwash or even just Dawn Dish Soap.

Then spray the spot with the cleaner and then come through with your finger and just gently work that in.

Now we don't want to scrub too hard and possibly damage the piece.

Now in my experience, the next step is kind of the most important step out of all of this pre-treating is you want to let the cleaner have time to work.

So let it sit on there for a minimum of 15 to 20 minutes.

The next tip is to never overload your washing machine.

And I know, I know, it can be tempting to just throw a few extra things in there,

but f you overload the washing machine, a few bad things can happen.

The first thing that can happen is it can cause unnecessary strain on your machine.

Maybe you've heard your laundry kind of clunking around or your machine is kind of moved across the room.

This could be caused by an uneven or overloaded washing machine and that's going to wear out things like your motor and your bearings.

Next, it can be very hard on your clothes.

When there's not enough room for them to kind of freely move around the drum, they can start rubbing together.

And the most important thing is that your clothes just don't get as clean.

Again, because the drum is so overloaded with clothes, the soap can't be properly distributed across the load.

And then when it's time to rinse, they also can't be properly rinsed.

So when you're done, you're left with kind of sticky, tacky, still dirty clothes.

Which defeats the entire purpose of doing the load of laundry in the first place.

Now, your washing machine at home probably is a little different than mine, and this can take a little bit of feel.

But a good test to make sure that you're not overloading it is to use the hand test.

There should be enough room for your hand to fit in between the clothes and the top of the drum.

If you struggle with lost socks, or maybe you just don't like sorting through all of your laundry, finding matching pairs,

what you can do is just wash them all together in a mesh bag.

That way, once they're nice and clean, they're all in one spot and you don't have to go searching.

Now, when it comes to detergent, I like to use about 2 tablespoons for a load this size.

Now, in the past when I had a really dirty load of laundry, I was tempted to use more detergent because I thought more detergent would equal a better clean.

But really what happens is you put too much soap in there and then it's harder to rinse out of your clothes.

Now, remember those stinky gym clothes I was talking about?

Well, the product that I really like to use that I feel does an amazing job is this one here from Downy's Rinse and Refresh.

All you need is about a fourth cup and just add it to your fabric softener dispenser.

And not only does it soften your clothes, but it gets the stink out as well.

When you're done using your washing machine, it's best to keep the lid open.

Now, this one here is obviously a top loader.

But specifically, if you have a front loader, this is super important because you want to make sure that air can flow through the machine and dry things out.

If you always keep them closed, that moisture is going to be trapped inside and start to produce stinky, smelly odors.

Now, when it comes to drying your clothes, this is an area to pay special attention to, because if done wrong, you can permanently ruin your clothing.

Now, the first thing to always make sure to check is the laundry symbols.

This will give you a lot of information on the proper way to dry your clothes.

For instance, some clothes like to be laid flat on, others like to hang dry, or some can just be thrown right in your dryer.

When transferring clothes from your washing machine to the dryer, I do suggest keeping in mind those clothes that had some nasty spots.

Now, remember this one had the chili here.

Now, if this spot was still on the shirt, you do not want to put it in the dryer because the heat is going to set the stain and then it will be impossible to get out.

So instead, retreat the spot, wash it again, and you should be good to go.

If you have something wet that you need to dry as quickly as possible, just add a few dry towels to your dryer.

This will absorb the moisture, getting them dry super fast.

A quick hack to de wrinkle shirts is to throw it in the dryer and grab two ice cubes.

Then we're going to turn on the dryer on medium heat for about 10 minutes.

And this is going to melt those ice cubes, creating steam so it gets rid of all the wrinkles on the shirt.

Now, this hack works really well if you're in a rush and just don't have time to grab your ironing board.

but it's a good reminder to mention to always clean out your lint wrap after every time you use the dryer.

Now, another thing that doesn't get thought of all the time is to actually clean the lint filter at least once a month.

Because if you like to use dryer sheets, these can actually create a buildup on the lint filter so air can't properly flow through and you can have issues.
