I am super excited for today's video because it's a little bit of a different video.

It's one where I am having a conversation with my wonderful guest.

She is the USA Today best selling author of the book Rich Relationships and it is a must read for you if you are wanting to cultivate more meaningful relationships in your life and in your career.

Selena sue is someone that I had met actually about 10 years ago.

She had invited people, entrepreneurs to her New York City condo where we got to see the Empire State Building from just outside her window.

And she had conversations with us as entrepreneurs.

I was in my early days of being a career coach and I remember sitting there in the living room feeling self doubt, feeling unsure of myself, feeling why was I here, did I even belong here?

But it was actually that event that I can tell you it ignited something within me.

Seeing how successful Slow Lena and the other entrepreneurs were, I decided I was going to put my head down, I was going to work hard and that is how I've grown and built the business that I have now.

And I've been able to help thousands of professionals in the process.

But the reason why I'm bringing this up is because Selena and I have reconnected just in this last few months and now she's here to share with you all of her insights and wisdom.

So just to give you a bit of background, Selena sue is a publicity and marketing strategist for visionary entrepreneurs, experts and authors who want to reach millions with their message.

She's helped clients and students get featured in places like O, the Oprah Magazine, Forbes and Inc.

And land interviews on popular podcasts and national tv.

Many of her clients have become industry leaders with seven figure businesses, raving fan bases and hundreds of thousands of followers.

And her approach comes down to building powerful and long lasting relationships with influencers in the media in a thoughtful, authentic way.

Now I know as you watching as a quiet achiever, you may not be necessarily looking to build your own raving fan base, but

there is something I can definitely say that you need to learn from Selena.

If it is that you want to grow your career, if you want to cultivate those meaningful relationships to help you advance in whatever it is that you want to do in your life.

And so the conversation that I had with Selena was amazing, full of nuggets of wisdom and I'm so excited for you to watch it.

So without further ado, here's the conversation that I had with my guest, Selena Selena sue.

And thank you so much for joining me here today.

Well, I'm not so sure if my audience is familiar with you, as most of them are in the corporate world and you've been more focused with entrepreneurs.

So I would love for you to just share a little bit about your story, your upbringing, and

what has shaped your passion for building rich relationships.

So originally I'm from Hong Kong and I spent most of my adult life in New York City.

And in my late 20s, I was working at a nonprofit.

I was making $42,000 a year, which in a big city like New York is not a ton of money.

And I was also in a place in my life where I had really low self esteem and self worth.

I had trouble getting out of bed in the mornings, trouble eating.

You know, things got so bad, my mom flew from Vancouver, where she was living at the time, to New York to be by my side to help me get on the subway physically, like get myself to work.

And that was when I started asking people and I asked a particular friend, do you know someone that can help me?

Because I just can't go on feeling this way.

And that's when I learned about this life coach.

And she had these women's circles and we would get together and read about these personal development books.

Deepak Chopra, Louise Hay, Marianne Williamson, the classics.

And then I started to really take more responsibility for my life and my mindset and feel more empowered.

And I started asking my friends, have you heard about these people?

And most of the time my friends had no idea who I was talking about.

And so just really dawned on me that sometimes the people with the most powerful message can still very much be a best kept secret.

And, you know, as I got into this world of personal development and live your best life, I just wanted to shout from the rooftops these amazing experts and authors and ideas exist and they can help you.

And so that's when I really fell into publicity.

I felt that, you know, if I could help these incredible people connect with the media and amplify their message to millions, that would be my way of making a big difference in the world.

So I did that for a number of years, about 12 years.

And more recently, I have shifted away from publicity and just focus fully on rich relationships.

I really believe that one rich relationship is more valuable than a hundred casual Connections.

So my approach to is all about quality over quantity and depth over superficial connections, which I think is great for Quiet Achievers or any person that feels like they have limited time where they can't just be this Energizer bunny and running around to every event and doing endless coffee chats, but

they really have to conserve their energy.

You had written about the fact that you were depressed earlier on in your career and then seeing who you are now and how you show now, it's surprising that happened to you.

So I kind of want to go back to that point and then we can definitely talk about how this relates to Quiet Achievers.

Because I know that a lot of Quiet Achievers right now are.

My guess when I was reading it from within your book, was that at a time in your life where you weren't so clear as to, I guess, what you were doing and the work, it didn't feel meaningful as much.

Was it that that was causing you to feel depressed?

I think it wasn't that I didn't love the work.

It was rather that I felt like I needed to be perfect all the time.

And if I didn' do my job perfectly, if my boss wasn't constantly impressed with me, then there was something wrong with me.

And when you're entering the workforce, it's very different than being a student and, you know, studying for exams.

You have to interact with other people and build relationships with them.

You have to know how to manage your energy and time and present yourself in a different way.

So there are all these things that I didn't have a background on.

I remember my boss was having me work an event and because I didn't have much experience with planning and that scale, she had noticed that, like, you know, she said to me, like, oh, you're good at short term event planning, but

like the long term events, you know, I didn't know what to anticipate, like, oh, we've got to meet about this, we've got to do about, you know, that.

And so anytime I was actually learning, like, oh, you didn't know this or I made a little bit of a mistake along the way, I felt really bad about myself as a person versus understanding.

And then in terms of your shift into publicity and now your focus is on rich relationships, I definitely want to dive into that because with Quiet Achievers, our focus our entire life has been to focus on our work.

What's in front of us, put our head down, do the things that we need to do.

And when it comes to building relationships, that's kind of an afterthought.

You know, if we build a good relationship with our boss or our coworkers, it just comes with the territory of having worked hard.

It's how our focus has been sort of that narrow focus.

And so could you, you know, enlighten us a little bit about why it's so important?

You said, you know, one rich relationship is more valuable than a hundred casual connections.

And how does that relate to the quiet achievers that are watching?

I mean, the way that people feel about you is not just about your quality of work, but

other people feel that they are important to you, then you become important to them.

So, yeah, I'm definitely having flashbacks to my nonprofit days and just having my head down and working really hard and being really quiet and not really conversing with other people.

I would, you know, work to get great speakers to come in as mentors.

I didn't really focus on, you know, the rich relationships within my office.

And there were times at other companies, too, where maybe people felt threatened by me, like, oh, my gosh, she's working so hard.

Is that like, does that make me look bad?
