poverty, the state of being extremely poor.

We have some word stress things going on here, so we're going to talk about that.

We love syllable stress to be at the beginning of the word in English on words like nouns and adjectives.

However, when we add certain suffixes, the stress shifts to further back in the word.

Our syllable stress is on word number one.

However, when we add this ity suffix in this case, we have an interesting spelling here.

This iety we are going to shift the stress to the syllable right before the suffix and we are going to pronounce the suffix as a d.

I am pronouncing this t as a flap t, which I like to teach as a fast d sound.

So syllable number one, instead of becoming pro or pra, becomes an.

Because when I unstress something, it's more likely to become the schwa.

Now let's talk about our more typical stress, which is stress on syllable number one and property, Property, property, property, property.

And then on poverty, poverty, poverty, poverty, poverty.

So again, think about the word stress shifting in propriety and then think about making your last syllable a D, which is going to add that flat t.
