Our adventure begins as most do, at our home in the heart of greater Tokyo area.

We have, for the very first time, our whole family is traveling by Shinkansen.

I feel like it wouldn't be a true episode of Life in Japan without some crazy weather to go along with it.

I hope this doesn't affect our journey today.

The girls were not allowed to leave the school.

This was dangerous, but they just cleared on to leave.

This trip relies on the girls getting back fast from school.

With everyone packed up and ready to go, we're just waiting for the twins.

So I think what's really amazing about Japan is we can go from the largest city in the whole world to the next largest city in all of Japan, and we can do it all fast via trains from one train to another.

Next time, Sarah, you're gonna have to take your own stuff.

Two different train lines will take us to the Shinkansen stop at Shin-Yokohama Station.

There's no food service on the bullet train, so we're planning on getting some unique bentos or dinner boxes prepared especially for the bullet train travelers.

That is, if we can get there with time to spare.

We're sitting down, how good is that, huh?

We're rushing to catch a 645 bullet train out of Shin-Yokohama, which means we're traveling at a very busy time.

Even with tons of people, things move smoothly and efficiently.

When things work in Japan, they really work well.

But as we'll see, when things break, well, just keep watching.

I feel like everybody's expectations of this, fast.

Look at our train, it's a beautiful deep blue.

The expectations were high, and rightly so.

We've seen and heard enough about Shinkansens to know that a lot of people prefer them to air travel.

Japanese bullet trains are almost always on time, super efficient, comfortable, and fast.

Shinkansen stops aren't just anywhere in the city.

These super high-speed trains run on their own high-speed track system, so there's only a few stops in the whole of greater Tokyo.

I don't quite live that way, but it's got to be on film.
