Do you do everything right at work such as you hit your deadlines, you double check your work, you deliver good results, you avoid office drama, you lay low, you work hard and yet at the same time you feel invisible?

We were all taught growing up that as long as you do those things you work hard, you get good results, you keep your head down, that ultimately you're going to be rewarded, you're going to feel fulfilled, that everything will work out great and I believed those things too.

Past simple

Back when I was in the corporate world I was doing all of those things but what I realized over time was that doing those things alone, just keeping my head down, working hard, achieving good results was not enough for me.

I knew that I had more potential in me and I wanted to grow and by only putting my head down and working hard I was actually holding myself back and I was playing small and it was only when I was able to make some changes within myself and I made some clear decisions for myself that I was able to step into a career that I was truly proud of and I believe this is relevant for you if you are someone who's currently feeling these types of feelings right now where you've been working hard all of these years, you've put in the time and effort, you've delivered good results but now you're feeling a little lost, a little stuck because you're not seeing the growth trajectory that you had seen over the last few years.

You're realizing that you're meant for more.

You can do more but you're not seeing the opportunities to be able to execute on that and so this video is for you.

So in this video I want to share with you a little bit about my story in terms of how I went from the corporate world to then building a career as an entrepreneur, a coach, a speaker and an author.

Now the whole point of this video isn't to get you to try to do the same thing and follow in my footsteps but it's more about sharing with you the lessons that I've learned throughout my career that I've also been able to teach my clients that have helped them to navigate their careers and grow within their careers because for me having been a recruiter, a headhunter in the corporate world to then being a career coach, someone that's helped professionals to land job offers to grow in their careers, I've seen it all.

I know what it takes to be able to navigate your career to get yourself to that next level and to ensure that you feel more fulfilled and you feel more rewarded as you go through your career.

So I want to share with you a few lessons that I've learned that hopefully will help you if you're feeling this way.

The key that I've discovered to being more confident in your career and in yourself is through understanding your story because like I wrote in my book The Quiet Achiever, understanding my story and the beliefs it instilled in me was a crucial step in breaking the cycle of overachievement and self-doubt.

It was through investigating my story that I understood that real confidence, the kind that isn't dependent on approval, comes from within.

It comes from recognizing where our patterns began and choosing to rewrite the narrative.

So here are four lessons and the story behind how I pursued career growth for myself and how you can do so as well.

So the first lesson that I've learned in my career is that if you feel that you're meant for more you're right.

So if I take you back in time to when I started my very first fancy corporate job it was as an auditor at a big four accounting firm and when I started working in that role I've shared this in previous videos I realized very quickly that this was not the line of work that I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

I just could feel that it was not the right fit for me and I knew that I wanted to pivot eventually that I was going to do something else I just didn't know what that was.

But even in those early days this was me back in my early 20s I knew that I was meant for more that there was something else I was here to do and that feeling stayed within me and so I eventually was led to make a pivot and that was when I pivoted into becoming a recruiter because again I was following my heart and I asked myself what would I like to do the most and that involved working with people helping people and talking to people.

I knew that I had the gift of communication I knew I had the gift of being able to support people and help people and finding jobs has always been something for me naturally has been a skill of mine.

From the time I was in high school I can tell you I landed multiple summer job opportunities and these were job opportunities that were not easy to get these were with government offices these were the elusive summer jobs that most kids would get through connections I was able to apply and get them and I was one of very few that landed those types of opportunities.

It goes far back my ability to help people in their careers and so I thought being a recruiter would help me with that with expressing my talents and so as I worked in that job as a recruiter I did really well I became a top performer I broke records I was well known at that time for the work that I was doing for the number of people that I was placing and some of these people were at the c-suite level now given all of that you would think that I was fulfilled and I was happy and I should have just stayed quiet and continued to work hard and I should have just stayed in that job right because everything was going well but this is where the lesson of if you feel like you're meant for more you're right comes in is that I started to feel hmm I've hit a whole bunch of goals I've met my I've exceeded my targets actually and now I'm starting to feel that feeling again that I'm meant for more but it was a little bit different from when I was in the accounting world it was more that I had more confidence in my abilities at this point I knew that I could offer more to the world and it turns out I was right because that was when I started to get visions and start to dream about working for myself and doing something completely different.

Now the reason why I'm telling you this story is not to get you to quit your job and go and do something different unless this also sparks something within you but what I'm really trying to say is that if you're feeling as though you're being called to do something more then listen to that it means that perhaps in your current role you've already met all your targets you've done all the good work you've achieved all the goals that you had set out for yourself when you first started that position and now you're ready for that next step it could be a promotion an actual step up in your career in job title in pay or it could be that maybe in your current role there's more that you could do but you just haven't done it yet and so that maybe there are more challenging projects that you could be working on maybe there are other teams that you could work alongside or work with maybe there's just different individuals or different clients that you could reach out to you and be doing work with more.

Whatever the case may be whatever job you're in or industry you're in it's really important to hone in on that feeling if you feel that you're meant for more you're right so ask yourself what is this more what does this more look like for me for me it was very different from maybe what it will look like for you but it's important to ask that question because then you'll gain the clarity you'll start to get the hunches as to what's next for you and you should trust that if you feel this way you are right.

Now the second lesson that I learned is that if you feel that you are ready for it meaning if you feel you're ready for more then ask for what you want.

I learned this lesson back when again I was in the corporate world specifically when I was a recruiter where as I started to feel that I could do more than just place people in jobs I felt that I had the ability to market I had the ability to do marketing for example put myself on videos or I had the ability to reach out to clients and do perhaps sales presentations I feel like there was more that I could do beyond just sitting at my desk and finding candidates all day and placing them in jobs and so what I did was as soon as I started to feel those things I went and asked for that I went and asked my boss at the time for more opportunities I asked for more growth and the reason why I say this is really important for you to do is because if you don't ask you will not know whether it's even possible for you to get what you want in your current position in your current company.

Oftentimes you might actually be surprised to hear that your boss says yes there is opportunity for you to do more here are the other exciting projects that I'd love to get you involved in here are you know some new teams that we'd like you to work with or whatever the case may be.

Now in my case I'm glad that I asked when I did because I learned very quickly that there wasn't more for me there was nothing available to me they weren't willing to give me anything more than what I was already doing and so that gave me clarity and that's what's really important when you're feeling kind of stuck in your job you need clarity you need to know is there more for me in this role and if you're feeling that there isn't as I did then that's when you have to make a decision and you have to decide are you willing and ready to just hunker down and stay where you're at or are you actually willing to take the next step and move up to the next level for yourself and do the things that you need to do to move on.

So it's really important to ask early find out gain clarity and then from there decide your course of action.

The decision here is am I ready to try to pursue another opportunity pursue a different career path pursue something else that would align with what I'm feeling inside or do I feel that I should stay where I'm at for now and continue to really hone in and improve on the skills that I have right now so that I can be ready for that next opportunity when it arises.

So for example communication skills if you are knowing that you're ready for that next level role but you know you still struggle with your communication in front of others in meetings in presentations and you want to really work on that then work on that now while you're in your current job rather than waiting to work on that in a new job.

Work on that where you're at so that when that next opportunity comes up you're ready to pounce and you feel that you'll be able to fit in you feel that you'll be able to do well.

The third lesson that I've learned out of the four lessons is switching jobs does not automatically solve the problem the real shift happens when you shift.

This is something that I've seen very often throughout my work as a career strategist and helping individuals to rise in their careers is we often think that the solution to why we're feeling stuck why we're feeling unhappy why we're feeling unfulfilled in our current jobs would be another job we think that another job is going to offer us that and then what I've seen happen because I've helped hundreds and thousands of people at this point to land new job offers is that they'll get that next job and then after a little while they realize they still feel the same way and so this is why what I've learned ultimately comes down to it's not the job that's going to solve your problems it's how you feel about yourself it's the shift that you have within yourself so what I mean by that is for me as an example when I switched from accounting to recruiting that did solve a certain problem for me in the sense that I was able to discover my gifts and talents I was able to find that I was actually very good at working with people that recruiting and helping people in their careers was something that I really enjoyed and so when I decided to leave the corporate world altogether to start my business it's not as though all of a sudden overnight I had success with my business and then that solved all my issues of being unhappy in the corporate world I had to shift I had to change if anything by shifting into another role if I did not change myself if I did not show up differently if I did not gather the courage and the bravery to put myself out there in a new way into the world then I would not have been able to create a successful career for myself and so this relates to you if you are currently in a job where you're feeling as though you're meant for more there's something else that you're here to do or maybe that there's a higher level that you want to get to and you think as long as I get to that next level I'm gonna feel better about myself that's not what happens generally what happens is you might get to that next level but then you're gonna realize there's more challenges involved with that next level there's new things to learn there's new ways to communicate there's new ways that you have to show up in terms of your presence your confidence your ability to relate to others all of these things are going to be required of you if you're going to step up in your career and if you don't work on that now if you don't make those shifts within yourself now those things are going to be extra challenging for you when you're in a role that's going to require you to step it up in an instant and so it's not the role that's going to make you feel better it's you shifting in how you view yourself how you feel about yourself how you present yourself how you carry yourself how you communicate all of those things are actually going to be the things that make you feel differently and once you start to feel differently about how you show up you're going to show up differently others are then going to feel differently about you and that is when those promotion opportunities are going to be available to you so I'm hoping this makes sense for you ultimately the next job is not going to solve your problems you have to solve your own problems first where you're at right now and if you can show up differently feel differently about yourself in a more positive way see yourself in that next level role already even though you don't yet have the title that is ultimately what's going to then attract those opportunities to you and that is what I've discovered within myself if I did not show up differently for myself if I put myself on YouTube if I did not start sharing and teaching people in a way that I had never had to do before when I was in the corporate world if I was not willing to take those risks and to learn new things on how to run a business on how to get clients and how to teach people and inspire people and lead people if I didn't learn those things I would not be able to be doing the work that I'm doing now so ultimately it comes down to you and finally lesson 4 is very similar to this previous lesson I just shared which is your career growth is a mirror of your self-belief shift your mindset and opportunities follow I have helped thousands of professionals in the work that I do and I've gotten to a point now where I've seen patterns I've recognized patterns in being able to identify how someone is able to rise and grow in their career and also see the different levels of fulfillment and confidence that people have about themselves in their career and what I've learned and what I've seen is that ultimately it's not the job title it's not necessarily the work or the company or the environment although all those things do matter but what starts first to be able to get those things what matters most is what you say to yourself what you believe about yourself how you feel about yourself because that then determines how you show up how you articulate your value how you communicate with others how you interact with others that's what's going to make the difference in getting you those opportunities that you want it comes down to you it comes down to your self-belief it comes down to what you're saying to yourself and it comes down to knowing that you bring value that you are valuable and instead of waiting for other people to call on you you're actually naturally attracting that just from me for example in the last little while putting myself out here online again and sharing my message speaking and sharing about what I know to be true for myself and for others who resonate with being quiet achievers I've been able to attract opportunities and clients and clarity to myself that I did not have even six months ago a year ago it's by putting yourself out there but also by putting yourself out there because you are believing in yourself you know that you have worth you have something to share you have value to offer so when you can really hone in on that that is when you will be able to attract the opportunities and the career growth that you deserve so those are four lessons that I've learned in my career and how I have been able to grow and how I've seen other professionals other quiet achievers been able to grow so hopefully something within those lessons has resonated with
