Howdy, Mark Serbu, Gun Designer Gun Nut, and today we have, I don't know, I was going to call it part three of the rifling video, but it's not going to be a complete video because I've got to go skiing soon, so I don't have time to work on a really big video.

I got to go out west and, you know, do all that stuff.

Anyway, now what's funny is this is our contestant from, well, was it the last video?

Yeah, this is the awful, awful experience, and you know what, it actually has rifling in it, and it's going to end up being used, and you're going to see that even though it's got pretty rotten rifling in it, I'm going to make it work.

And these are the two remaining 4140 heat-treated, you know, drilled and reamed and honed barrel blanks that actually are going to serve double duty as pins for the hydraulic press because we lost the other pins in the move for the time being, so these are going to act as pins for that.

These are 12L14 steel, which is the most machinable steel on the planet.

It's really, it is the most machinable steel.

You shouldn't be using it for barrels, but I'm going to do it just to see, you know, what's going to give the least amount of resistance to the rifling buttons.

This one is the Chinese one, and it's all pretty and beautiful, and titanium nitride coating, it's tungsten carbide.

You know, I bitched about the last one, and the guys, the actual makers of the button got ahold of me, and just as I suspected, they sent me a new one for free.

The last one, I was like, eh, this one is nicely made.

First up is the Ukrainian button, and pilot end is the short end, well, yeah, as I'm pointing to the long end.

The pilot end is the long end, and you can also see this is a combination button, so it's got a little bump right here, which sizes the rifling aftergasser, sizes the bore.

So I've got this full, absolutely full of MOLLE grease, molybdenum disulfide.

Just MOLLE for those of you who don't like four-syllable words, molybdenum.

This thing is kind of crappy, but it's going to work today.

Now we're ready to use, I got these Chinese, I got to go get them, got these Chinese pieces of drill rod that are hardened, and here they are.

They have all kinds of different lengths, which is kind of convenient, so we don't have the column buckling problem we've had in the past.

Now they're hardened, and I don't really agree with them being hardened, and I'll explain that later.

I'm going to be paranoid and back it off a little bit, because the one reason I don't like these being hardened is that now you're scraping some hardened tool steel right behind the rifling you're just making.

Remember I bitched about that in the last video?

Ideally, just the very tip of it would be hardened where it touches the button, just the end.

Maybe even turn it down in diameter where it touches the button, so you don't have to worry about the hardened part ever running into your rifling.

So now, Tim using a piece of barrel here, cut off 50 cal barrel, plenty of those around the shop.

So, nobody bitches about, oh, you have a new lube in there.

So, we've got to start putting spacers in, so the button can start coming out.

Four.  Six.  Eight.      14.                We've got to stack up.

I planned on having one that was just solid.

I'm glad I did it this way, because as you can see, we've got to play musical chairs back and forth with this crap.

And, of course, let's look at our barrel.

I'm going to go degrease it and see what it looks like.

I wish you could see it, but you know how this stuff goes.

I guess I'm going to put my glasses on just in case something explodes.

All right, as you can see, it's a different color.

It's actually tungsten carbide as opposed to high-speed steel, and it is titanium nitrate.  It's triode-coated.

That's why it's gold, and it's pretty nicely made.

I'm living dangerously actually holding on to the thing, but I think it's a good idea to get it started.

Now I'm going to get out of here so it doesn't shoot off into my crotch.

And you can see it, so you can barely tell it's been through there.

It's got a little bit of the finish rubbed off.

Cool.  You're not going to tell from there, though.
