Hi everybody, Jennifer from Tarle speech.

I have a co-articulation lesson for you today.

To-infinitive

Co-articulation is when one sound influences another and today's lesson is going to be on co-articulation between the N when it is followed by a G or when it is followed by a K.

Alright, let's start with how do we say a K and a G sound.

We say a K and a G sound with the tip of the tongue down and the back of the tongue pulled high up.

Voicing is on for the G and it's off for the K.

So that means our voice box is on and moving for the G and it's off for the K.

So our tongue tip is in the bottom of our mouth.

The N, we make it through the nose and the tip of the tongue is touching the back of the top front teeth where the teeth and the skin on the roof of the mouth meet.

But to make this easier, what we're going to do is we're going to put our tongue in the bottom of the mouth because the K and the G are coming and we want to make this a little bit easier with less movement.

So we are actually going to say this N sound as an NG sound.

Because the NG sound has the tongue in the same place as K and G.

You can see your tongue is in the same spot, it doesn't move.

This is going to make it easier to connect all of the sounds and to make this word sound a lot better and more native.

So let's give this a try with the word jungle.

Okay, so my tongue tip is down for the NG and then I add the G.

Okay, so that's the co-articulation for that.

This next section that we're going to talk about, syllable two in all of these, this gl and col.

Why am I writing it like that and why did you pronounce it like that?

Because we are going to say the K and G with the tongue tip low.

Then the tongue has to move to the L, which ends by the tip of the tongue touching where the teeth and the skin meet on the roof of the mouth.

But we are not going to have a break in between there.

We are going to connect those sounds and we want to keep the air moving out of the mouth while the tongue moves.

That is going to sound like an uh sound in the middle of those two sounds.

Okay, now that we know both of those things, let's try these words again.

I will say them one time and then you take a turn.

All right, I'm going to say them one more time and then you take a turn.

My uncle twisted his ankle while walking through the jungle trying to read the angles on the map.

I know people are going to notice the difference and I don't really think there are angles on a map, but I just wanted to throw that word in there.
