According to traditional belief, the underworld has a gate.

Imagine it guarded by officials like Nyu Tu Ma Myon, the ox-headed and horse-faced guardians.

Most of the time, that gate stays closed.

But on the first day of the seventh lunar month, the doors are opened.

And from that moment until the end of the month, spirits of the deceased are free to wander the human world.

When the month ends, the gate closes, and they all return to the underworld.

From the Taoist side, the seventh month is presided over by the earth official, who is believed to grant pardons for sins.

That mercy is symbolized by letting spirits roam free.

From the Buddhist side, there's the Ulaanbaatar festival, Yulan Penjie, on the 15th day.
