What's up, everybody, and welcome back to Vagabrothers in VR.

And this is the Pushkar Camel Fair in Rajasthan, India.

Pushkar is home to one of the largest camel fairs in the world, as well as one of the holiest sites in all of Hinduism.

Welcome to Pushkar, a small village in the northwest of India, in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan.

Every November, 80,000 camel herders descend on the village to buy and sell over 400,000 camel, cattle, and horses, before bathing themselves in the holy lake of Pushkar on the full moon.

The camel is central to the culture of Rajasthan, India's largest yet least populated state, where for thousands of years, these guys have used the shifts of the desert as transportation, food, and a source of leather.

Rajasthan's nomadic camel herders are a tribe known as the Raika.

Originally the caretakers of the Maharaja's stables, they have traveled these deserts for centuries, looking for grazing ground and water for their camel herds.

But this fascinating culture is struggling to survive into the modern era.

Traditional grazing grounds are shrinking, and they're being forced to sell off the female camels, which are essential to maintaining herd size.

That's why festivals like Pushkar are so important.

It allows the Raika to gather into one place, express their culture, and pass on traditions to the next generation.

Rajasthani camel herders have great style, including excellent mustaches, so much that they hold an annual Longest Mustache competition.

I can't see right now because my face is getting the most intense rub down of all time.

In India, a wet shave like this with a straight razor costs about $1, so it's excellent value and an easy way to pick up some local style.

Anyways, I think it's time to get back into this festival.

Good feeling.  Music is also central to the festival.

It's believed that Europe's Roma people, also known as gypsies, originated here in northwest India before mysteriously migrating west hundreds of years ago.

If you listen closely, you can hear the roots of flamenco music.

While the men buy and sell camels and the young try to find love, the women come here to the marketplace to buy colorful local textiles and sell camel products to help support the  But it's not just business and religion.

There's plenty of entertainment here as well, including a camel beauty contest.

Now, I don't really know what makes a camel beautiful, but these camels sure have style.

And that little girl has the best sense of balance I've ever seen.

But the camel trading is just the prelude to the main event, bathing in the holy lake of Pushkar under the full moon.

According to Hindu legend, this is where Brahma, creator of the universe, killed a demon with his sword, and from his palm fell three lotus petals to form the holy lake.

There are 52 of them around the lake, and it's believed that bathing here during the festival will wash away all your sins.

There's over 400 temples and shrines in Pushkar, including the only one in the world dedicated to the creator of the universe, Lord Brahma, which brings hundreds of thousands of pilgrims here every year.
